Biography

Short Description

Santo Spes, known in Latin as Sanctus Spes, was a monastic abbot in the province of Nursia (modern Norcia in Umbria, central Italy) during the late fifth and early sixth centuries. Almost everything that can be said of him with historical caution derives from a single sixth-century source: the Dialogues of Pope Saint Gregory the Great, composed in the 590s. Gregory presents Spes as a man of venerable life who had been dedicated to God from his youth and who governed a monastery in that district. No earlier document names his parents, records a place of birth, or supplies a precise chronology, and Gregory himself gives neither a birth year nor a year of death.

Gregory’s narrative centres on a long trial of blindness. Spes remained without sight for forty years, yet he continued to rule his community and to persevere in prayer and monastic observance. Shortly before the end of his life his vision was restored. He then summoned the monks, told them that he would soon die, celebrated the Eucharist, received Holy Communion, and after a brief interval departed this life. Those present testified that they saw a dove issue from his mouth and ascend through the roof of the oratory until it disappeared from view in the heavens, a sign they understood as the going forth of his soul. The Roman Martyrology later summarised this tradition, placing his feast on 28 March and describing him as an abbot of Nursia remarkable for patience, whose soul his disciples beheld rising to heaven in the form of a dove.

Subsequent local devotion in the Valnerina and Val Castoriana associated Spes with the early eremitical settlements of the region and sometimes linked him with Saint Eutychius (Sant’Eutizio), whose abbey near Preci became an important monastic centre. Gregory, however, recounts the two lives in separate chapters and does not present Spes as a companion of Eutychius or as a monk of Syrian origin; those details belong to later regional tradition rather than to the sixth-century text. Because Spes lived well before the diffusion of the Rule of Saint Benedict, it is anachronistic to assign him to the Benedictine order, even though later houses in the same valleys became Benedictine.

Beyond Gregory’s account, verifiable facts are scarce. Later hagiographical compilations have commonly assigned his death to 513, but that year is not found in the Dialogues and remains traditional rather than documented. He is not recorded as having married or as having held episcopal or patriarchal office. His recognition as a saint belongs to the ancient, pre-congregational veneration of holy abbots whose memory was kept by monastic communities and eventually entered the universal martyrology; he was never the subject of a formal papal canonization process of the later medieval type.
