Biography

Short Description

Sárnait, also known in anglicized form as Sourney, was a Gaelic Irish virgin saint whose memory belongs to the early medieval church of Ireland. She is generally placed in the sixth century, the era of the first great wave of Irish monastic foundations, but no contemporary Life of the saint survives and no precise year of birth or death can be established from any reliable source. Later genealogical tradition identifies her as of the race of Fiachra, son of Eochaid Mugmedon, that is, of the Uí Fiachrach; more specifically she is linked with the Uí Fiachrach Aidhne, the branch that ruled the small kingdom of Aidhne in south Connacht, in the later diocese of Kilmacduagh (now south County Galway and the adjoining part of County Clare). Irish martyrologies consistently style her a virgin (ogh), which is the basis for treating her as a consecrated woman of the early Irish church rather than as a married foundress.

Her principal church is given as Cill Sárnait, anglicized Killasserny or Killasserney, in the parish of Kilmacduagh. Local tradition in south Galway further identifies her with the early church of Drumacoo, near Kinvara, where a medieval parish church—notable for a fine Romanesque doorway of about the thirteenth century—and a holy well dedicated to Saint Sourney remained the centres of her cult into the modern period. She is associated in later tradition with Saint Colmán mac Duach (Colman of Kilmacduagh), founder of the nearby monastery of Kilmacduagh and likewise of Uí Fiachrach Aidhne stock. Some accounts treat her as a contemporary, kinswoman, or spiritual associate of Colmán, but the nature of any historical relationship cannot be verified from early documents, and no medieval vita narrates her career in detail.

The earliest liturgical witness to her cult is the Martyrology of Tallaght, compiled around the beginning of the ninth century, which commemorates “Sarnat i Tír Énnae” on 3 May. Tír Énnae, however, denotes a territory in what is now County Donegal, and this localization has led scholars to ask whether more than one holy woman of the name Sárnait was remembered, or whether a Donegal notice and a Connacht cult have been conflated in the later record. The seventeenth-century Martyrology of Donegal lists “Sarnat, virgin” on 8 May and assigns her to the race of Fiachra son of Eochaid Mugmedon, thereby aligning her with the Connacht genealogy rather than with Tír Énnae. Because of these variant entries, her feast has been recorded on both 3 May and 8 May. She was never the subject of a papal canonization or beatification; like the great majority of early Irish saints, her sanctity was recognized by local cult and by inclusion in the native martyrologies.

Beyond those martyrological notices, the genealogies, and the archaeology and folklore of Drumacoo, almost nothing of a narrative biography survives. Sárnait belongs to the large class of early Irish saints whose memory was preserved by a local church, a well, and a feast day rather than by a written Life. The persistence of the well-cult of Saint Sourney and the dedication of Drumacoo church attest to the durability of her veneration in Aidhne even while the details of her life remain largely irrecoverable. Caution is therefore required: floruit in the sixth century, a Connacht (Aidhne) localization, virgin status, and the double feast-day tradition are the elements that can be stated with some confidence; dates of birth and death, a birthplace more precise than Ireland, a burial site, and any extended legend of miracles or monastic foundation are not attested in sources that will bear critical weight.
