Biography

Short Description

Saint Sidwell, known in Latin as Sativola and also recorded under forms such as Sidwella and Sithewell, is a virgin martyr whose cult was centred on Exeter in Devon in southwestern Britain. Almost nothing about her can be established from contemporary records; she belongs to the large class of locally venerated British and early English saints whose lives were written down only centuries after the period in which they were believed to have lived. Later tradition usually places her in the eighth century, though some writers have preferred an earlier date in the sixth or seventh century, while Devon was still in the orbit of British Dumnonia or was passing under West Saxon rule. No reliable source preserves a year of birth or of death, and her historical existence, as distinct from the reality of her medieval cult, cannot be independently verified.

The medieval legend, known in its developed form from sixteenth-century antiquaries such as John Leland and from local Exeter tradition, presents Sidwell as the daughter of a nobleman living just outside the city. After her father’s death her stepmother, motivated by jealousy of the young woman’s piety and perhaps of her inheritance, hired a band of reapers or haymakers to murder her. They found her at prayer in a field and struck off her head with a scythe. A spring of water was said to have risen where her head fell to the ground; in some tellings she is a cephalophore who carried her own head. She was buried nearby, and a church later rose over the grave. A related and historically doubtful genealogy makes her a sister of Saint Juthwara of Halstock and of other obscure West Country female saints, thereby linking the Exeter cult to wider south-western hagiographical cycles. That kinship is treated by modern scholars as a later literary construction rather than as a recoverable family history.

The existence of the cult itself is better attested than the biography. A church of Saint Sidwell stood outside Exeter’s east gate by the later Anglo-Saxon or early Norman period; the parish and well of St Sidwells preserved her name through the Middle Ages. Bishop Leofric of Exeter and subsequent liturgical books of the cathedral and diocese gave her a place in local calendars. Her usual feast is 31 July, though some Exeter and later sources also give 2 August. In art she is commonly shown with a scythe, the instrument of her martyrdom, and sometimes with a well or with her severed head. The medieval parish church was rebuilt more than once; it was gutted in the air raid on Exeter in 1942 and subsequently reconstructed. The holy well associated with the legend lay in the same district, east of the walled city.

Modern historians treat Sidwell as a figure of local devotion whose legend was shaped by familiar hagiographical motifs—the wicked stepmother, death by an agricultural implement, the miraculous spring, and the cephalophoric saint—rather than as a person whose career can be reconstructed in detail. She was never the subject of a papal canonization in the later medieval or modern sense; her sanctity rested on immemorial local veneration of the kind later classed as pre-congregation cult. She is often named as a patron of Exeter, or more precisely of the parish and suburb that still bear her name. No evidence indicates that she belonged to a religious order, contracted a marriage, or had children; the tradition uniformly presents her as a consecrated virgin.
