Biography

Saturnina Rodríguez de Zavalía, known in religion as Catalina de María, was born on 27 November 1823 in Córdoba, a principal city of the former Spanish Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata and later of independent Argentina. She was raised in the Catholic faith in a family of local standing. In 1852 she married Manuel Antonio Zavalía. The marriage lasted more than a decade and remained childless. After she was widowed in the mid-1860s she did not remarry. She turned instead to a more intense life of prayer and to charitable work among the sick and the poor of Córdoba, in a period when female religious congregations and works of mercy were expanding in the Argentine Church.

In the 1870s, with the support of clergy in Córdoba, she gathered women who wished to live in community and to serve through education and assistance to those in need. In 1875 she founded in Córdoba the congregation of the Handmaids of the Heart of Jesus (Esclavas del Corazón de Jesús). She took the religious name Catalina de María and became the first superior of the institute. The congregation was dedicated to devotion to the Heart of Jesus and to apostolic works, especially the education of girls and the care of orphans, at a time when Argentina was consolidating as a nation and the Church was rebuilding schools and charitable institutions.

As foundress she worked to form the sisters, to give the community a stable way of life, and to establish houses as circumstances allowed. Accounts from her lifetime describe a widow-turned-religious marked by interior prayer, practical charity, and perseverance through the ordinary hardships of a new foundation, including poverty and the slow process of ecclesiastical recognition. She remained in Córdoba, the city of her birth and of her congregation’s origin, until her death there on 5 April 1896.

A reputation for holiness attached to her within the congregation and in Córdoba. In the twenty-first century Pope Francis recognized that she had lived the Christian virtues to a heroic degree, declaring her Venerable, and later approved a miracle attributed to her intercession. She was beatified on 14 April 2019 in Córdoba. She has not been canonized. Blessed Catalina de María is commemorated on 5 April, the anniversary of her death, and is remembered as an Argentine widow, religious foundress, and figure of nineteenth-century Catholic life in Córdoba.
