Biography

Short Description

Saint Satyrus of Milan (also known as San Satiro) was a fourth-century Roman Christian of senatorial rank, remembered above all as the brother of Saint Ambrose, bishop of Milan, and of Saint Marcellina. He was born at Trier (Augusta Treverorum), then the residence of the praetorian prefect of Gaul, while his father, also named Ambrosius, held that high imperial office. After the father’s death the widow returned with her children to Rome, where Satyrus and Ambrose received the standard aristocratic education in law, rhetoric, and letters. Marcellina, the sister, was later consecrated as a virgin at Rome. Precise year of birth is not recorded in surviving sources; later estimates that place it in the early 330s are inferences from the better-attested chronology of Ambrose and should not be treated as documented fact.

Satyrus entered public life as a jurist and administrator and is described in ancient accounts as having held high civil office, sometimes characterized as a provincial prefecture or comparable governorship. When Ambrose, then consular governor of Liguria and Aemilia, was unexpectedly chosen bishop of Milan in 374, Satyrus resigned his own career in order to take charge of the family’s temporal affairs. He thereby freed his brother to devote himself wholly to the episcopate. He administered estates, conducted litigation, and served as a trusted counselor in the Milanese household. The arrangement reflects the still-fluid boundary in the later fourth century between senatorial public service and the support of a newly elected bishop drawn from the same class.

On a journey to Africa undertaken to recover family property that had been appropriated, Satyrus suffered shipwreck on the return voyage. In the funeral oration later preached by Ambrose, Satyrus, in peril of drowning, obtained the Eucharist from a baptized fellow passenger, wrapped it in a cloth, and fastened it about his neck before committing himself to the sea; he reached land unharmed. The episode was cited by Ambrose as a testimony of faith and has often been read as an early witness to belief in the Real Presence. Not long after his return to Milan, Satyrus fell ill and died, in or about 378. Like many Christians of his generation and social standing he appears to have deferred baptism for a time; hagiographical tradition holds that he received the sacrament after the shipwreck and lived only a short while as a baptized Christian. The two discourses Ambrose delivered on his death, collected as De excessu fratris Satyri, remain the principal historical source for Satyrus’s life and character. They portray him as just, modest, generous to the poor, and wholly dedicated to his brother and to the Church.

Satyrus was buried at Milan in the chapel of the martyr Saint Victor. His cult remained essentially local. In the later ninth century a church in Milan was dedicated to him; the present Santa Maria presso San Satiro preserves that dedication. The Roman Martyrology commemorates him on 17 September. He was never the subject of a formal papal canonization of the later medieval or modern type; his veneration belongs to the ancient, pre-congregational cultus of the Church of Milan and of the wider Latin Church. He is remembered as a model of the Christian layman who placed family duty and the service of the Church above secular ambition. No reliable ancient source records a wife or children, nor membership in a religious order.
