Biography

Short Description

Savinian and Potentian (Latin Savinianus et Potentianus; French Savinien et Potentien) are a pair of Christian saints traditionally honoured as the first evangelizers of the Senones and as the earliest bishops of Sens, the Gallo-Roman city of Agedincum in what is now north-central France. According to a tradition already current in the medieval church of Sens, they were missionaries sent from Rome—by the Apostle Peter in some versions of the story, by his successor Linus in others—to preach among the Senones. Savinian is remembered as the first bishop of the see; Potentian is described variously as his priest or deacon, or as the second bishop. Their legendary Acts, which in the form that survives belong to the later Middle Ages rather than to antiquity, also associate with them other local figures such as Altinus, Eodaldus and Serotinus. Nothing reliable is known of their birth, parentage or early lives; even the century of their activity is not fixed by contemporary evidence.

The same legendary cycle recounts that the two missionaries converted many inhabitants of Sens, organized a first Christian community there, and in some strands of the story dispatched companions to neighbouring cities. They are said to have suffered martyrdom at Sens during a persecution, sometimes placed under a named third-century emperor and sometimes left without a precise setting, and to have been put to death together with companions. Because the Acts are late, internally inconsistent and unsupported by independent early testimony, modern historians treat Savinian and Potentian as figures of cult rather than as securely documented historical persons. An organized church at Sens is historically visible from the fourth century onward; later medieval writers appear to have retrojected an apostolic or sub-apostolic origin onto the see by means of these two saints, a pattern well attested among other Gallic bishoprics that sought a direct link to Rome and to the age of the martyrs.

Devotion to Savinian and Potentian was centred on Sens. Their relics were claimed by the Benedictine abbey of Saint-Pierre-le-Vif, which local tradition held to have risen over their burial place, and the abbey became an important focus of pilgrimage. Translations of the relics were celebrated in the medieval liturgy of the diocese. The Roman Martyrology records the two saints on 31 December, which remains their principal feast; other local observances commemorated the translation of their relics. They are honoured as patrons of the city of Sens and of its former archdiocese, which in the Middle Ages was a metropolitan see of wide jurisdiction. A church of Saint-Savinien at Sens, among the oldest Christian sites in the town, is associated with their memory.

Although almost nothing about their lives can be verified from sources earlier than the high Middle Ages, Savinian and Potentian occupy a stable place in the religious memory of Sens. They function in local tradition as the apostolic founders of Christianity in that part of Gaul, analogous to other legendary Gallic missionary pairs and groups whose cults were elaborated in the same centuries. Their veneration illustrates how early medieval churches constructed a sacred origin for their bishoprics by linking them to Rome and to martyrdom, and it continued in liturgical calendars, relic cult and civic patronage long after critical hagiography had distinguished legend from recoverable history.
