Biography

Short Description

Schema-Igumen John of Valamo, known in the world as Ivan Alekseyevich Alekseyev, was an Eastern Orthodox monk and spiritual elder of the Valaam monastic tradition. He was born on 14 February 1873 in the village of Gubka in the Tver Governorate of the Russian Empire, the son of a peasant family. Like many rural children of his time and region, he received only a limited elementary education and was accustomed from youth to agricultural and household labor. Accounts of his early life emphasize a serious disposition and an attraction to church services and prayer. In early adulthood he resolved to seek the monastic life and traveled to the great monastery of Valaam, situated on islands in Lake Ladoga, then one of the most renowned monastic centers of the Russian north.

Received as a novice at Valaam in the opening years of the twentieth century, he was later tonsured a monk with the name Iakinf (Hyacinth) and in due course ordained deacon and priest. Valaam at that time comprised a large central monastery and numerous sketes scattered across the archipelago, and he served in various obediences among them. After the Russian Revolution the islands of Valaam lay within the borders of independent Finland, and the monastery passed under the canonical care of the autonomous Orthodox Church of Finland. In the 1930s he was tonsured into the great schema, receiving the name John, and was given the rank of igumen. Those who knew him described a man of few words, marked by humility, inner prayer, and a reluctance to accept honors.

The Soviet–Finnish Winter War of 1939–1940 brought the historic Valaam community to an end on its ancient site. The monks were evacuated under wartime conditions; the islands were subsequently incorporated into the Soviet Union and the old monastery was closed. After temporary sojourns, the surviving brotherhood settled in 1940 at a former manor estate in Heinävesi in eastern Finland, which became New Valamo (Uusi Valamo). Schema-Igumen John lived there for the last eighteen years of his life. He was not the administrative head of the reduced community, but he emerged as its principal starets, or spiritual father. Laypeople, parish clergy, and younger monks sought his advice in person and by letter. His correspondence, written in a simple and direct style, dwelt on repentance, patience in suffering, the continual invocation of the name of Jesus, distrust of one’s own opinion, and charity toward others. A selection of these letters was published after his death and later appeared in English as "Christ is in Our Midst: Letters from a Russian Monk," which made his teaching known well beyond Finland and the Russian emigration.

John died at New Valamo on 5 June 1958 and was buried in the monastery cemetery. Veneration of his memory grew quietly among those who had known him and among readers of his letters. In 2018 the synod of the Orthodox Church of Finland formally glorified Schema-Igumen John of Valamo as a saint and appointed 5 June, the day of his repose, as his feast. He is remembered as a late representative of the Valaam school of inner prayer and as a humble elder whose counsel was shaped by long monastic practice rather than by formal theological education.
