Biography

Short Description

Sebastian Valfrè, known in Italian as Sebastiano Valfrè, was born on 9 March 1629 at Verduno in Piedmont, then part of the Duchy of Savoy in northwestern Italy. His family circumstances were modest, and his early years belonged to the ordinary rural world of seventeenth-century Piedmont. After first schooling he was sent to the nearby town of Bra for the humanities and later continued his studies in Turin, where he completed philosophy and theology. Drawn to the example of Saint Philip Neri, he entered the Congregation of the Oratory in Turin in 1651. The Oratorians are secular priests living in community without religious vows. He was ordained priest in 1652 and remained attached to the Turin Oratory for the rest of his life.

Valfrè’s ministry was concentrated on preaching, catechesis, and above all the confessional. He acquired a wide reputation as a confessor and spiritual director, sought out by people of every rank in Savoyard society. For many years he served as confessor and adviser to members of the House of Savoy, including Duke Victor Amadeus II, while continuing to visit the poor, the sick, prisoners, and soldiers. He was known for personal austerity and for a practical charity that led him to give away clothing, food, and alms. In the militarized world of late seventeenth-century Piedmont he took a particular interest in the spiritual care of troops. He also promoted frequent communion and devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, in keeping with the Oratorian tradition of accessible, affective piety. He left no substantial body of writings; his influence was exercised through conversation, the confessional, and example.

The most dramatic public episode of his later life was the French siege of Turin in 1706, during the War of the Spanish Succession. Valfrè remained in the threatened capital, encouraging both the garrison and the civilian population. Hagiographical tradition, drawing on contemporary reports, holds that he assured the city of eventual deliverance and that his presence helped sustain morale until the siege was lifted in September 1706. In ordinary times his reputation rested on gifts of counsel, a capacity to read hearts in the confessional, and reports of mystical prayer, including ecstasies and interior locutions, though later writers have to rely on the testimony of those who knew him rather than on any treatise of his own. His holiness was pastoral and practical, exercised in the daily round of an Oratorian house in a capital often disrupted by war and court politics.

He died in Turin on 30 January 1710, at the age of eighty, and was buried in the church of the Oratory there. Popular veneration at his tomb began almost at once. After the usual processes of inquiry in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, he was beatified by Pope Gregory XVI in 1834. His liturgical commemoration is kept on 30 January, the anniversary of his death. He has not been canonized. Devotion to Blessed Sebastian Valfrè has remained strongest in Turin and Piedmont, where he is remembered as a priest of the Oratory, a confessor of both city and court, and a figure of charity during a turbulent period in the history of Savoy.
