Biography

Short Description

Sebestyén (Latin: Sebastianus; known in English as Sebastian) was a prelate of the Latin Church in the early Kingdom of Hungary who held the metropolitan see of Esztergom in the first years of the eleventh century, during the reign of King Stephen I. Almost nothing about his birth, family, education, or early career is recorded in sources that can be independently verified. The principal chronological anchor for his life is the Annales Posonienses, annals associated with the chapter of Pozsony (Pressburg, modern Bratislava), which note that Archbishop Sebastian died in 1007. That notice is generally accepted by modern historians as deriving from an earlier eleventh-century record, and it supplies the only reasonably secure date attached to him. No reliable text names his birthplace, the country of his origin, the place of his death, or his burial.

The order of the first archbishops of Esztergom is itself a long-standing problem of Hungarian ecclesiastical history. The archbishopric was organized around 1000–1001 in connection with Stephen’s royal coronation and the erection of a Latin hierarchy, traditionally with the involvement of Pope Sylvester II. Later medieval narratives, including the fourteenth-century Illuminated Chronicle, sometimes present Sebastian as the first archbishop. Most modern reconstructions, however, treating the Annales Posonienses and related indications, regard a prelate named Dominic (Domonkos) as the first incumbent and place Sebastian as his successor from about 1002 until 1007. The thirteenth-century chronicler Simon of Kéza asserted that Sebastian was of Swabian (German) origin and had entered Hungary in the household of Queen Gisela of Bavaria, Stephen’s wife. Scholars have treated that claim with reserve, because Simon frequently ascribed German ancestry to Hungarian magnates; Sebastian’s actual origin therefore remains unknown.

The chief narrative that later writers have connected with Sebastian is the legend of King Stephen composed by Bishop Hartvik in the early twelfth century. Hartvik recounts that the archbishop of Esztergom became blind, after which Stephen entrusted the government of the metropolitan church to Astrik (Anastasius), a Benedictine missionary prelate who had been sent to Rome to obtain a royal crown. When the afflicted archbishop recovered his sight, a dispute over the see was resolved, according to the legend, by papal provision: Astrik was to hold a second archbishopric (subsequently associated with Kalocsa) and was to succeed at Esztergom when the restored prelate died. Hartvik does not name the blind archbishop. Historians have commonly identified him with Sebastian, but the identification is inferential rather than explicit. If it is accepted, Sebastian’s last years included a period of incapacity and the emergence of Astrik as the leading figure of the Hungarian church.

Apart from these notices, Sebastian’s activity as metropolitan cannot be documented with confidence. Charters issued in the name of King Stephen that have sometimes been cited for the early archbishops survive only in later copies and are of disputed authenticity; they cannot safely be used to place Sebastian at particular consecrations or donations. Hagiographical texts concerning other saints of the conversion period are either silent about him or, where they have been read as allusions to the first generation of bishops, are too late or too anachronistic to bear much weight. After the death recorded in 1007 he was succeeded at Esztergom by Astrik. Sebastian was not the object of a medieval liturgical cult, was neither beatified nor canonized, and has no attested feast day or patronages. He remains an obscure but structurally important member of the first generation of the Hungarian hierarchy, known securely only as an archbishop of Esztergom who died in 1007 and otherwise visible mainly through later chronicle and legend.
