Biography

Short Description

Secundus of Victimulae, known in Italian as San Secondo di Victimula, is a Christian martyr whose cult is localized in the Piedmont region of northern Italy. Virtually nothing can be established about him from contemporary historical sources. The toponym Victimulae refers to an ancient Roman settlement in the Biellese, in the present-day province of Biella, in the vicinity of the modern comune of Salussola. Classical authors including Pliny the Elder and Strabo mention Victimulae in connection with gold mining operations that were active in the area during the Roman period.

Later medieval and early-modern hagiographical tradition identifies Secundus as a soldier of the Theban Legion. According to the well-known account transmitted by Eucherius of Lyon in the fifth century, the Theban Legion was a unit of Christian soldiers from Egypt that was massacred at Agaunum (modern Saint-Maurice in the Valais) in the late third century for refusing idolatrous worship. Local Piedmontese legend asserts that Secundus escaped that massacre, fled southward, and was eventually apprehended and executed at Victimulae. Similar stories attaching otherwise undocumented local martyrs to the Theban Legion are widespread throughout the western Alpine region and northern Italy; they typically date from the early Middle Ages and serve to confer prestige upon an existing cult rather than to record independently attested events.

No authentic passio or contemporary acta of Secundus survive. Consequently, the date, circumstances, and even the historicity of his martyrdom remain uncertain. Traditions that place his death in the reign of the emperor Maximian cannot be confirmed. Nothing is known of his family, place of birth, or ecclesiastical status. He does not appear to have been a bishop, abbot, or member of a religious order. His veneration is attested by a church dedicated to him in Salussola, of which he is regarded as patron saint. The cult has remained essentially local.

Modern historians therefore treat Secundus of Victimulae as one of the many poorly documented saints of late-antique or early-medieval northern Italy whose biographies were later elaborated through the popular Theban Legion cycle. Archaeological investigation of the ancient mining settlement of Victimulae has not produced epigraphic or material evidence that would independently corroborate a third- or fourth-century Christian martyrdom at the site. The saint’s memory continues to be observed in the local liturgical calendar of the diocese, but the precise feast day and the history of the translation of any relics are not securely documented in sources available for verification.
