Biography

Short Description

Ségéne mac Fiachnaí (also rendered Segene, Segeni, or Seghine) was a seventh-century Irish monk who served as the fifth abbot of Iona, the island monastery founded by Saint Columba in the Inner Hebrides. A member of the Cenél Conaill, the Donegal kindred to which Columba himself had belonged, he was the son of Fiachnae mac Feradaig, a cousin of the founder. That kinship placed him within the hereditary circle from which Iona customarily chose its abbots. He succeeded Fergnae Britt in 623 and governed the Columban familia for nearly three decades, until his death in 652. Surviving notices of his life are brief and largely annalistic, but they are consistent in presenting him as a central figure in the expansion and self-definition of Columban Christianity.

During Ségéne’s abbacy Iona’s missionary influence reached a new height in northern Britain. After Oswald of Northumbria recovered his kingdom and sought clergy formed in the Irish tradition he had known in exile, it was Ségéne who dispatched the mission that established the monastery and episcopal see of Lindisfarne. The first candidate sent proved too austere for the Northumbrians; Ségéne then sent Áedán (Aidan), whose patient ministry from 635 onward laid the foundations of the Northumbrian church. Through this and related foundations, the liturgical and monastic customs of Iona were planted across much of what is now northern England and southern Scotland, and Iona’s standing as a mother-house of the northern mission was confirmed.

Ségéne is equally remembered as a principal defender of the traditional Irish reckoning of Easter. In the early 630s the southern Irish churches, under pressure from continental and papal example, began to adopt the Victorian or Dionysian tables used in Rome. Cummian’s letter De controversia Paschali, addressed to Ségéne and to a hermit named Béccán, rebuked Iona for clinging to the older eighty-four-year cycle. Pope Honorius I likewise wrote to the Irish clergy urging conformity. Ségéne and the Iona community nevertheless retained the Celtic computation, a stance Iona would abandon only in 716, long after his death. The controversy did not prevent continued cooperation in mission, but it marked Iona as the conservative heart of the Columban tradition during a generation of intense liturgical debate.

The Irish annals also record that in 635 Ségéne founded a church at Rechru, generally identified with either Rathlin Island or Lambay Island off the Irish coast, illustrating the abbot’s care for the Irish as well as the British houses of the familia. He died in 652 and was succeeded by Suibne moccu Fir Thrí. Later Irish martyrologies, including the Martyrology of Donegal, commemorate him on 12 August. Although no contemporary vita survives and many personal details remain unknown, the combination of annalistic record, the Cummian correspondence, and the Northumbrian mission narrative is enough to show Ségéne as the abbot who both extended Columban Christianity into Anglo-Saxon Northumbria and held Iona to its inherited paschal discipline.
