Biography

Short Description

Senán mac Geirrcinn, known in Latin as Senanus and later as Saint Senan of Scattery, was a sixth-century Irish monastic founder and bishop. He is the principal saint of Inis Cathaigh (Scattery Island) in the Shannon estuary and the traditional patron of County Clare. Medieval Irish genealogies present him as the son of Geirrcinn (Gerrchend) mac Dubthaig, of the Corca Baiscinn of west Clare, and of Coemell of the Corca Duibne. His birthplace is given as Magh Lacha, identified with Moylough near Kilrush. Later compilers assigned the year 488 for his birth and 544 for his death; these figures circulate widely in martyrologies, annals, and modern reference works, but they are products of medieval chronological tradition rather than of records contemporary with the saint.

He is counted among the Twelve Apostles of Ireland, the group of monastic founders whom later legend described as disciples of Saint Finnian of Clonard. Other strands of tradition place his schooling with Saint Natalis at Kilnamanagh. The surviving Lives, written in Irish and Latin several centuries after his death, narrate a period of study and pilgrimage on the Continent and in Britain, including visits to Rome and to the tomb of Saint Martin of Tours, after which he was ordained priest. On returning to Ireland he is said to have established or presided over a number of churches in Munster before making his definitive settlement. Places associated with his name include Inis Mór, Inis Tuaisceirt, and various mainland sites; the historical sequence and even the identification of some of these locations remain uncertain.

Inis Cathaigh became the centre of his abbacy and of his later cult. According to the legend that gives the island its name, it was inhabited by a fearsome sea-monster, the Cathach, which Senán banished by making the sign of the cross, thus opening the island to monastic life. He is depicted as ruling a community of monks as abbot-bishop and as enforcing a rule that forbade women to enter the island. The well-known tale of Saint Cannera (or Canair) of Bantry recounts that she, at the point of death, sought the sacrament from Senán and a grave on Inis Cathaigh; after she had argued against the exclusion of her sex, he permitted her to come ashore, and she died and was buried there. These narratives belong to the hagiographical literature of the ninth to twelfth centuries and cannot be treated as straightforward sixth-century biography, yet they defined how Senán was remembered.

Tradition holds that he died on Inis Cathaigh and was buried in his own monastery. Irish annalistic notices and the martyrologies converge on a mid-sixth-century date, most often 544. His principal feast is 8 March, already registered in the Martyrology of Óengus and other early Irish calendars; a secondary commemoration on 1 March appears in some later sources. Archaeological remains on Scattery Island—including a round tower, the ruins of a cathedral church, and several smaller churches and cross-slabs—mark the site of the monastery that claimed him as founder. His cult was especially strong in County Clare and along the Shannon, with dedications, holy wells, and local patterns preserving his memory. He did not receive a formal papal canonization of the kind later required in the Western church; like other saints of the early Irish church, he was venerated on the basis of long-standing liturgical and popular tradition.
