Biography

Short Description

Saint Apollonius, often called Apollonius the Apologist or Apollonius of Rome, was a Christian martyr of the late second century, remembered in the Church as a Roman senator of philosophical learning who was put to death for the faith during the reign of the emperor Commodus. Neither his year of birth nor his place of birth is preserved in any reliable ancient source, and nothing certain is known of his family, education, or career before the events of his trial. What can be said of him rests chiefly on Eusebius of Caesarea’s Ecclesiastical History, on a brief notice by Jerome, and on Greek and Armenian recensions of martyrdom acts that purport to record his interrogation. Eusebius describes him as a man renowned among the faithful for philosophy and learning, living at Rome at a time when, in parts of Commodus’s reign, the situation of Christians was comparatively less harsh than it had been under earlier emperors.

According to this tradition, Apollonius was denounced as a Christian by one of his own slaves. Roman practice treated a slave’s accusation against his master with severity, and the informant was executed. Apollonius was then brought before the praetorian prefect Tigidius Perennis and subsequently remanded for a hearing before the Roman Senate. Rather than recant or offer sacrifice to the gods of Rome, he delivered a reasoned defense of Christianity, addressing the character of Christian worship and the moral life of believers. Because Perennis held the prefecture until 185, the proceedings and death are customarily placed in or about that year. The so-called Acts of Apollonius, surviving in Greek and in Armenian translation, are generally counted among the more historically grounded of the early martyr acts, even though scholars recognize later literary shaping in the texts.

Condemned by the Senate, Apollonius was put to death at Rome. The precise manner of execution is not uniformly reported in the ancient witnesses; later hagiographical tradition commonly states that he was beheaded. No reliable source records a wife or children, nor membership in a monastic community or clerical order; he is remembered as a lay senator and confessor. His cult is ancient and pre-congregational: he was never the object of a formal papal canonization of the later medieval type. The Roman Martyrology commemorates him on 18 April, recalling his philosophical character, his defense of the faith, and his condemnation by the Senate. Specific patronages of places, professions, illnesses, or causes are not firmly attached to his name in the major liturgical and hagiographical collections.
