Biography

Short Description

Seraphim (Ostroumov), born Mikhail Mitrofanovich Ostroumov on 6 November 1880 in Moscow, came from a clerical family of the Russian Empire; his father Mitrofan was a priest. He received his theological formation in Moscow, completing the Moscow Theological Seminary in 1900 and the Moscow Theological Academy in 1904 with the degree of candidate of theology. On 2 July 1904 he was tonsured a monk with the name Seraphim, in honor of Saint Seraphim of Sarov, who had been canonized the previous year. He was ordained hierodeacon the following day and hieromonk later in 1904. From 1906 he served on the faculty of the Kholm Theological Seminary in the western borderlands of the empire (Chełm, in present-day Poland), becoming inspector and then rector, and was elevated to the rank of archimandrite. The seminary served the Orthodox population of the Chełm and Podlachia region, an area of long-standing confessional contest among Orthodoxy, Roman Catholicism, and the Uniate tradition.

On 3 April 1916 he was consecrated Bishop of Belsk, vicar of the Kholm and Lublin diocese. The First World War had already forced the evacuation of Orthodox diocesan institutions from Kholm as the front receded, and his early episcopate unfolded amid wartime displacement. He took part in the All-Russian Local Council of 1917–1918 in Moscow, which restored the patriarchate and sought to reorganize church life after the fall of the monarchy. Following the collapse of imperial authority and the emergence of an independent Polish state, the Chełm region passed out of Russian civil control. Bishop Seraphim continued his ministry in Soviet Russia rather than remaining in Poland.

In the later 1920s he was appointed Archbishop of Smolensk and Dorogobuzh, a see he occupied through the years of the Renovationist schism and the tightening of Soviet anti-religious policy. He remained with the Moscow Patriarchate under the deputy patriarchal locum tenens Metropolitan Sergius (Stragorodsky) and worked to preserve canonical Orthodox life in the Smolensk diocese as parishes were closed and clergy arrested. He was arrested by the NKVD on 11 November 1936 and held in the Smolensk prison. Accused of counter-revolutionary activity and anti-Soviet agitation, charges typical of the Great Purge as it struck the remaining episcopate, he was sentenced to death by a troika of the NKVD of Smolensk oblast on 26 November 1937.

He was shot on 8 December 1937. The place of his burial is not known with certainty. At the Jubilee Bishops’ Council of the Russian Orthodox Church in August 2000 he was glorified as a hieromartyr among the New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia. His memory is kept on 8 December (the date of his death in the civil calendar), corresponding to 25 November on the Julian liturgical calendar, as well as with the synaxes of the New Martyrs of Russia and of the saints of Smolensk.
