Biography

Short Description

Serafina of God, known in Italian as Serafina di Dio, was a Carmelite nun, mystic, and foundress of monasteries in the seventeenth-century Kingdom of Naples. She was born Prudenza Pisa in Naples on 24 October 1621. Naples was then the populous capital of a Spanish Habsburg kingdom and one of the largest cities in Europe, marked by sharp contrasts of wealth and poverty and by a dense Catholic culture of confraternities, convents, and baroque devotion. Prudenza came from a family of some means; later biographical tradition links her paternal origins to Scala on the Amalfi coast. From an early age she was drawn to prayer and to consecrated life rather than to the marriage that would have been the ordinary path for a young woman of her station.

She entered upon a Carmelite vocation and took the religious name Serafina di Dio. The Carmelite Order, reformed in the previous century by Teresa of Ávila and John of the Cross, offered a demanding program of contemplative prayer, enclosure, and poverty that had already taken root in Italy. Serafina is associated with the spread of that Teresian Carmelite life among women in southern Italy. She lived through the plague of 1656, which devastated Naples and its hinterland and reshaped the city’s religious landscape. In the following decades she worked to found cloistered communities of Carmelite nuns. Foundations connected with her activity were established on the island of Capri and in other localities of Campania, including towns of the Sorrentine peninsula and the Bay of Naples. Creating such houses required papal or episcopal licenses, dowries and property, and the cooperation of local elites and clergy; her career therefore combined contemplative ideals with considerable practical and administrative effort.

Contemporary and later accounts describe Serafina as a mystic, attributing to her an intense interior life, experiences of prayer, and a reputation for austerity and spiritual counsel among the nuns of her monasteries. Such claims belong to the hagiographical culture of baroque Catholicism and are not always easy to verify in independent documentary detail. She remains, in English-language scholarship, a relatively little-studied figure whose life is known mainly through Italian religious biography and the memory of the communities she founded. What is clear is that she became the central personality in a small network of Carmelite women’s houses in Campania and that she spent her last years on Capri, in one of those communities.

Serafina died on Capri on 17 March 1699, in her seventy-eighth year. Veneration of her memory continued after her death among the nuns of her foundations and among local faithful. A cause for beatification was in time introduced, and she has sometimes been called venerable in Catholic writing, but she has not been beatified or canonized by the Holy See and has no feast in the general Roman calendar. She is remembered principally as a foundress of Carmelite monastic life in the Kingdom of Naples and as a representative of female contemplative and institutional initiative in seventeenth-century southern Italy.
