Biography

Short Description

Seraphin of Montegranaro was born in 1540 in Montegranaro, a small town in the March of Ancona in central Italy, then under the temporal rule of the papacy. He was baptized with the name Felice. His family was poor, and like many children of laborers in that region he received little schooling and was put to work early as a shepherd. After his parents died he came under the authority of an older brother who treated him harshly. In the solitude of pasture work he formed habits of prayer and a desire for a more dedicated religious life, despite the absence of books or formal instruction.

In his mid-teens, around the age of sixteen, he sought admission among the Capuchin Franciscans, a reform of the Friars Minor that had begun in the 1520s and was spreading through Italy with an emphasis on austerity and a return to the primitive Franciscan rule. He was accepted as a lay brother, not as a candidate for the priesthood, which matched both his lack of education and his inclination to hidden service. He passed his novitiate and early years in houses of the order in the Marche, including the convent at Jesi. His principal work for much of his life was that of questor: he traveled on foot to collect alms of food and money for the support of the friars. That occupation kept him in daily contact with townspeople and peasants and became the setting for the charity and counsel for which he was later remembered.

Those who lived with him described a life of unusual self-denial combined with a gentle and even joyful manner. He practiced fasting, night prayer, and the lowest household tasks, and he was known for giving away to the needy even the little that came to him. Capuchin records and subsequent lives of the saint credit him with miracles of healing, with knowledge of hidden sins or future events, and with a power of consolation that drew the troubled to him. He showed particular devotion to the Eucharist, before which he would remain in prayer for long periods, and to the Blessed Virgin. He never held office in the order and remained a simple brother until death.

In his later years he was stationed at the Capuchin convent in Ascoli Piceno. He died there on 12 October 1604. Local devotion to the humble questor grew quickly. The Church formally recognized his cult when Pope Benedict XIII beatified him in 1729. Pope Clement XIII canonized him on 16 July 1767. His liturgical feast is kept on 12 October. He is venerated as the patron saint of Montegranaro, and his body is preserved in the Capuchin church of Ascoli Piceno, a focus of pilgrimage in the Marche.
