Biography

Short Description

Seraphina Sforza was born Sveva da Montefeltro in 1434 at Urbino, in the Marche of central Italy, then the seat of the counts of Montefeltro. She was a daughter of Guidantonio da Montefeltro, Count of Urbino, and of Caterina Colonna, a member of the Roman Colonna family related to Pope Martin V. Guidantonio died in 1443. In 1444 her half-brother Oddantonio, who had succeeded as count, was assassinated, and another half-brother, Federico da Montefeltro, took control of Urbino. Sveva's early years were thus spent amid the violent succession politics of a Renaissance lordship. She received the education customary for a girl of her rank and spent time under the protection of her Colonna kin as well as of Federico before a marriage was arranged to bind the Montefeltro to the rising Sforza family of the Romagna and Lombardy.

In 1448 she married Alessandro Sforza, lord of Pesaro and a professional condottiero, younger brother of Francesco Sforza, who would become Duke of Milan. Alessandro had been married previously to Costanza Varano of Camerino, who died in 1447; that marriage had produced two children, Battista Sforza and Costanzo Sforza. Sveva therefore entered Pesaro as stepmother to Battista, later the celebrated wife of Federico da Montefeltro, and to Costanzo, who would succeed his father in Pesaro. The union with Alessandro was unhappy. He was often away on campaign in the wars of mid-fifteenth-century Italy, and later tradition, supported by the outline of contemporary reports, describes his treatment of Sveva as severe. By the later 1450s the marriage had broken down. Alessandro confined his wife and, in 1457, compelled her to leave the palace and enter the monastery of the Poor Clares of Corpus Domini in Pesaro. Hagiographical accounts reject the charges sometimes associated with this expulsion and present her as an innocent victim of a dynastic husband's will.

In the monastery Sveva took the religious name Serafina and professed as a member of the Order of Saint Clare. She lived thereafter under the Franciscan rule of the Poor Ladies, in enclosure at Pesaro. Sources describe her religious life as one of penance, humility, and patience, shaped by the memory of her failed marriage and by the austerity of Poor Clare observance. She is said to have served her community as abbess. Alessandro Sforza continued to rule Pesaro until his death in 1473; Seraphina remained in the monastery and outlived him. She died in Pesaro on 8 September 1478.

A cult in her honour grew in Pesaro among the Poor Clares and the local church. In the eighteenth century this cult received papal recognition: Pope Benedict XIV beatified her in 1754, confirming her as Blessed Seraphina Sforza. She was not subsequently canonized. Her liturgical commemoration is kept on 9 September. She is remembered in Catholic and Franciscan tradition as a noblewoman of the Italian Renaissance who, after a broken political marriage, persevered in contemplative religious life, and as a beata associated with the city of Pesaro and the Order of Saint Clare.
