Biography

Short Description

Serapion of Novgorod was a Russian Orthodox monk and hierarch who served as Archbishop of Novgorod the Great and Pskov from 1506 until his deposition in 1509. His year and place of birth are unknown; surviving sources do not record his family origin. He was a monk of the Trinity Monastery of St. Sergius, the principal monastic house of Muscovy, and in 1495 he was appointed archimandrite of that monastery when its former abbot, Simon, became Metropolitan of Moscow. On 15 January 1506 he was consecrated archbishop of Novgorod, succeeding Gennady, who had been removed from office in 1504. Since Ivan III’s annexation of the Novgorod Republic in 1478, the Novgorod archbishops had been chosen in Moscow rather than elected locally, and Serapion’s appointment belonged to that new Muscovite order.

His short tenure was overshadowed by a clash with Joseph of Volokolamsk, abbot of the Dormition monastery at Volok and the leading spokesman for cenobitic monasticism and monastic landownership. In 1507, amid a dispute with the appanage prince Fyodor Borisovich of Volok, Joseph placed his monastery under the protection of Grand Prince Vasily III and thereby withdrew it from the jurisdiction of the Novgorod archbishop without Serapion’s consent. Serapion treated the act as a breach of canon law and in 1509 issued a ban of excommunication against Joseph. The quarrel became a test of episcopal rights versus princely and Josephite influence. A council convened in Moscow in July 1509, with Metropolitan Simon presiding and the grand prince’s support behind Joseph, condemned Serapion, deprived him of the Novgorod see, and ordered his confinement.

Serapion was held first at the Andronikov Monastery in Moscow and was later transferred to the Trinity-Sergius Monastery, where he had once been abbot. The Novgorod archbishopric then stood vacant until 1526. After Joseph’s death in 1515 the ecclesiastical penalty was lifted under Metropolitan Varlaam and Serapion was restored to communion. He died at the Trinity-Sergius Monastery on 16 March 1516 and was buried there. The Russian Orthodox Church venerates him as a saint, with principal commemoration on 16 March; he is also remembered in the synaxes of the saints of Novgorod, of Radonezh, and of Moscow.

Little survives that would allow a full portrait of Serapion’s pastoral government or spiritual teaching. He left no substantial body of writings comparable to those of Joseph of Volokolamsk or of the Transvolgan elders, and later hagiography is relatively thin. His historical importance lies in the light his fall sheds on the centralization of the Muscovite church, the limits of diocesan authority under Vasily III, and the bitter early sixteenth-century struggles over monastic property and the relationship between bishops, abbots, and the grand prince. Later tradition honored him as a confessor who suffered for defending the canonical rights of his see.
