Biography

Short Description

The figure listed in Wikidata under the identifier Q62561603 bears the name Serapion. That name is a theophoric Greek formation based on Serapis, the syncretic deity promoted in Ptolemaic Egypt, and it was in common use among Greek-speaking and Hellenized Egyptian Christians from the second century of the Common Era. Hagiographical and ecclesiastical sources preserve the memory of a number of bishops, monks, and martyrs called Serapion, principally in Egypt, Syria, and, in later centuries, in the Latin West and in Rus'. The absence of a corresponding encyclopedia article and of any further unique descriptors attached to Q62561603 means that the item cannot be matched, on present evidence, to a single historically documented person. In keeping with a preference for silence over conjecture, dates of birth and death, places, offices, and cultic particulars are therefore not supplied.

Among the better-attested bearers of the name, one Serapion was bishop of Antioch at the end of the second century and the beginning of the third. The church historian Eusebius of Caesarea, writing a century later, records that this Serapion wrote to Caricus and Pontius against a growing Montanist movement and that he addressed a letter to the church at Rhossus concerning the so-called Gospel of Peter, which he judged docetic and unfit for public reading. Fragments of his literary activity survive only through Eusebius. In the fourth century a different Serapion occupied the episcopal see of Thmuis in the Egyptian Delta. He was a correspondent and ally of Athanasius of Alexandria during the Arian controversies, received from Athanasius the Letters on the Holy Spirit, and is credited with an euchologion (a collection of liturgical prayers) and a work against the Manichaeans. Egyptian desert literature of the same period also knows a Serapion called the Sindonite, an itinerant ascetic whose only possession was said to be a sindon, or linen cloth; stories about him appear in the Lausiac History of Palladius and in related collections of monastic anecdotes.

Medieval and early modern martyrologies and menologia add further Serapions whose biographies are often late or legendary. The Mercedarian Order venerated a Serapion, sometimes called Serapion of Algiers or Serapion of England, said to have been martyred in North Africa in the thirteenth century after a career of ransoming captives; the details of his life rest largely on order chronicles composed well after the events they describe. In the Russian church, Serapion of Vladimir, a thirteenth-century bishop and preacher, and Serapion, archbishop of Novgorod in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, are commemorated, as is the monastic founder Serapion of Kozheozero. African martyr lists, including those connected with Alexandria in the Decian and later persecutions, mention still other men named Serapion, frequently with no more than a name and a place of suffering.

Because these figures belong to different centuries, regions, and ecclesiastical traditions, they cannot be collapsed into a single biography. Early cults of this kind typically arose from local commemoration and liturgical memory rather than from a centralized process of canonization or beatification of the type later used in the Latin church. Feast days assigned to the various Serapions fall on different dates in the Roman Martyrology, the Byzantine synaxaria, and Slavic menologia. Patronages, burial sites, and family status are likewise specific to each individual and are not recorded in a form that can be attached safely to Q62561603. The present notice therefore limits itself to situating the name in the Christian historical record and to acknowledging the limits of identification.
