Biography

Short Description

Serenidus of Saulges, known in French hagiography as Saint Cénéré (also Céneré, Sérénide, or Sérène), was a Christian hermit of the seventh century whose cult is centered on the village of Saulges in Maine, in present-day Mayenne in northwestern France. Medieval tradition, preserved in the hagiography of the former diocese of Le Mans, presents him as a native of Spoleto in Umbria and as the brother of Saint Serenicus, called Céneri in French. The brothers are described as members of a noble family who embraced the religious life, left Italy, and travelled into Gaul in the Merovingian period. No contemporary seventh-century documentation of their careers survives; the narrative depends on later medieval vitae and on local liturgical and toponymic tradition, and historians therefore treat the Italian origin and many biographical details with caution.

According to that tradition, Serenidus and his brother were received in the diocese of Le Mans and then separated in order to live as hermits in the countryside of Maine. Serenidus settled at Saulges, occupying a cave in the limestone outcrops still known as the Grotte de Saint-Cénéré. There he is said to have lived in poverty and prayer, to have instructed the surrounding rural population in the Christian faith, and to have been associated with a spring later credited with healing, especially of the eyes. His brother established himself farther east, in a loop of the river Sarthe, at the site that became the village of Saint-Céneri-le-Gérei. The pairing of the two brother-hermits left a durable mark on the religious geography of the region between the Mayenne and the Sarthe.

Serenidus is traditionally reported to have died at Saulges around 669. His grave became a focus of veneration. The parish church of Saint-Pierre at Saulges, which retains early medieval fabric including a crypt, has long been linked to his memory and relics; a chapel and the hermit’s grotto continued to attract pilgrims in later centuries. His feast is kept on 7 May, a date shared in some calendars with his brother. The cult remained essentially local, typical of many Merovingian-era holy men whose reputations were maintained by diocesan tradition rather than by a widely circulated literary legend.

Because the written lives are late and conventional, little can be affirmed beyond the existence by the central Middle Ages of an established cult of Saint Cénéré at Saulges, the association of grotto and fountain with regional pilgrimage, and his remembrance as a hermit-evangelist of rural Maine. He held neither the see of Rome nor a patriarchal office. The sources present him throughout as a celibate ascetic; there is no evidence that he married or had children. Formal papal canonization in the later medieval or modern sense did not apply to a figure of this date: his status as a saint rests on ancient local cult and inclusion in diocesan calendars.
