Biography

Short Description

Sergi Florinski (Sergei Fyodorovich Florinsky) was a parish priest of the Russian Orthodox Church, later numbered among the New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia. He was born on 4 March 1873 in the village of Voskresenskoye in the Poshekhonsky district of the Yaroslavl Governorate, in the family of the priest Fyodor Florinsky. Raised in a clerical household, he studied at the Yaroslavl Theological Seminary and completed the course in 1893. In the ordinary path of the married (white) clergy he first served as a psalm-reader and was then ordained deacon and priest in the 1890s, ministering in parishes of the Yaroslavl region before his transfer to the Baltic provinces.

In 1908 he was appointed rector of the Church of the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos in Wesenberg (now Rakvere) in Estonia, then part of the Russian Empire. He served a mixed Orthodox congregation of Russians and Estonians through the closing years of imperial rule. During the First World War he was assigned as a military chaplain to the 151st Pyatigorsk Infantry Regiment, accompanying troops and receiving imperial decorations for pastoral service at the front. After the revolutions of 1917 and the German occupation of Estonia he returned to his Rakvere parish.

In late 1918, during a brief Bolshevik occupation of the area in the Estonian War of Independence, Florinski was arrested by the Cheka. On 30 December 1918 he was taken with other prisoners into a forest outside Rakvere and shot. Church accounts state that he continued to pray with and comfort fellow prisoners until the execution. Independent English-language archival publication on his private household is scarce; the surviving narrative rests chiefly on diocesan records and later Orthodox hagiographical compilations, which treat him as a married parish priest rather than a monk.

Veneration arose among Orthodox Christians in Estonia and in the Russian diaspora. The Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia included him in its glorification of the New Martyrs in 1981. The Moscow Patriarchate canonized him at the Jubilee Bishops' Council of August 2000 as a member of the Synaxis of the New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia. His memory is kept on 17 December (Julian calendar), corresponding to the date of his death, and with the general synaxis of the New Martyrs.
