Biography

Short Description

Severian Baranyk was born Stepan Baranyk on 18 July 1889 in Uhnów (now Uhniv in Lviv Oblast, Ukraine), a Galician town then in the Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria within Austria-Hungary. Raised in the Ukrainian Greek Catholic tradition, he entered the Order of Saint Basil the Great, the principal monastic order of that Church, and received the monastic name Severian. After philosophical and theological studies in the Basilian formation system, he was ordained a priest in 1915. He belonged to a generation of Basilian hieromonks who combined monastic life with active pastoral work as preachers, confessors, and missionaries among the Ukrainian Catholic population of Galicia.

After the First World War, eastern Galicia passed from Austria-Hungary to the Second Polish Republic. Baranyk continued to serve in Basilian houses and parishes. He was later appointed superior of the Basilian monastery in Drohobych, an industrial and oil-producing city south of Lviv, and pastor of the monastery church. As hegumen he governed the monastic community and provided liturgical and sacramental care to the Ukrainian Greek Catholic faithful of the town, at a time when that Church retained a strong presence in the region despite political tensions between Polish authorities and the Ukrainian population.

The situation of the Church changed drastically after September 1939, when the Soviet Union occupied eastern Poland under the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact and incorporated Galicia into the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic. Soviet policy was hostile to the Greek Catholic Church, which the authorities regarded as an obstacle to the assimilation of Ukrainians into the Russian Orthodox Church and the Soviet system. Clergy were interrogated, property was seized, and monasteries were restricted. Baranyk remained at his post in Drohobych through the first Soviet occupation.

In June 1941 Germany invaded the Soviet Union. As the Red Army and the NKVD retreated from western Ukraine, the secret police massacred prisoners in a number of jails, including the prison in Drohobych. Baranyk was arrested by the NKVD around 26 June 1941. He was tortured and put to death in the Drohobych prison. After Soviet forces withdrew, local people found the bodies of the victims; Baranyk’s remains were identified among them and showed signs of brutal torture. He was fifty-one years old. His death formed part of the wider destruction of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic hierarchy and clergy that continued through the later Soviet reoccupation and the official liquidation of the Church in 1945–1946.

On 27 June 2001, during his apostolic visit to Ukraine, Pope John Paul II beatified Severian Baranyk in Lviv together with a group of other twentieth-century martyrs of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church—bishops, priests, monks, nuns, and laypeople who had died under Soviet or Nazi persecution. He is venerated as Blessed Severian Baranyk, a hieromartyr of the Basilian Order. The Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church commemorates these blessed martyrs on 27 June. He has not been canonized.
