Biography

Short Description

Saint Séverin d'Agaune, known in Latin as Severinus of Agaunum, was a monk and abbot associated with the shrine of the Theban Legion at Agaunum (present-day Saint-Maurice in the Valais) at the turn of the sixth century. Surviving notices of his life are late and hagiographical rather than contemporary. They present him as a Burgundian of noble birth who embraced the monastic life at Agaunum, a mountain sanctuary already famous for the cult of Saint Maurice and his companions. A community of clergy and monks served the martyr shrine well before King Sigismund of Burgundy endowed the great royal abbey there in 515 and instituted the laus perennis, or perpetual psalmody. Tradition names Séverin as abbot of that earlier community.

His reputation for holiness and for the gift of healing reached the Frankish court. According to the medieval vita and the Roman Martyrology, King Clovis I, stricken with a dangerous fever, sent for the abbot of Agaunum. Séverin traveled from the Alps into Gaul, prayed over the king, and Clovis recovered. The episode is not attested in Gregory of Tours or other sixth-century Frankish historians; it belongs to the later cultic tradition that linked the Alpine abbot with the first Catholic king of the Franks. On the journey back toward Agaunum, Séverin fell ill himself.

He died at Château-Landon in the Gâtinais, a town on the road network of northern Gaul, on 11 February, the date retained as his feast. The year usually given in later calendars and compilations is 507, which would place his death in the last years of Clovis (who died in 511). He was buried at Château-Landon, where a church dedicated to him arose over his tomb and where a collegiate or monastic community later guarded his relics. The cult remained essentially local, centered on Château-Landon and on the memory of Agaunum, though his name entered Western martyrologies.

Because no contemporary vita or charter names him, almost every biographical particular—parentage, the exact status of the Agaunum community during his abbacy, the circumstances of the journey to Clovis, and even the year of death—rests on medieval tradition rather than on documents that can be independently checked. The chronological tension between an abbacy ending around 507 and the formal foundation of Saint-Maurice d'Agaune in 515 has long been noted by historians. What the tradition preserves with consistency is the figure of an Alpine abbot named Severinus, invoked as a healer of the Frankish king, whose tomb at Château-Landon became a place of veneration and whose feast is kept on 11 February.
