Biography

Short Description

Severin of Cologne, known in Latin as Severinus, was a bishop of the Christian community of Cologne in the later fourth century and is venerated as a saint. He is customarily described as the third known bishop of Cologne, after Maternus, who is attested at the councils of Rome in 313 and Arles in 314, and Euphrates. Contemporary written evidence for Severin's own career is extremely sparse. No fourth-century letter, inscription, or conciliar signature that is certainly his has survived, and later medieval lives of the saint mix local memory with legend. Claims that he was a native of Bordeaux belong to this later layer of tradition and cannot be verified from early sources. In his lifetime Cologne was still the Roman city of Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium, capital of Germania Inferior, a fortified Rhine metropolis whose Christian community had already produced a bishop of imperial stature in Maternus.

The most important early notice of Severin comes from Gregory of Tours, writing in Gaul in the sixth century. In his account of Saint Martin of Tours, Gregory states that on the day of Martin's death in 397 the bishop of Cologne named Severinus heard angelic singing and perceived that Martin had died, and that he communicated this knowledge to the clergy of his church before any messenger from Tours could have arrived. The story is told as a miracle, yet it has chronological value: it shows that by Gregory's day Severin was firmly remembered as bishop of Cologne at the close of the fourth century, and that he was believed to have been alive in 397. Traditional martyrologies and episcopal catalogues place his death in 403. That year is conventional rather than independently documented by a contemporary obituary, but it is consistent with the window opened by Gregory's anecdote.

Within the limits of the evidence, Severin's episcopate belongs to the consolidation of Catholic Christianity in the Rhineland after the Constantinian peace and during the long controversy over Arianism. Later writers portray him as a defender of Nicene orthodoxy. While that picture is plausible for a western bishop of his generation, the specific episodes attached to his name are not found in contemporary records. Tradition also credits him with establishing or fostering a church in the extensive Roman cemetery that lay south of Cologne's walls, originally associated with the cult of the Roman martyrs Cornelius and Cyprian. That extra-mural sanctuary became the nucleus of the later parish and collegiate church of St. Severin. The choice of a cemetery church fits well-known fourth-century practice, in which bishops were often buried among the Christian dead outside the city and their tombs became centres of cult.

Archaeological investigation beneath the present Basilica of St. Severin has confirmed the existence of a late Roman burial ground and of a memorial building of the fourth century, which is reasonably interpreted as the first architectural expression of the cult at Severin's grave. The standing church is a medieval Romanesque basilica, one of the twelve great Romanesque churches of Cologne, raised over those earlier remains and repeatedly rebuilt. Through the Middle Ages the canons of St. Severin maintained the saint's relics and his liturgical memoria. The basilica remains the principal place of his burial and veneration. Because Severin's sanctity was recognised by local episcopal and popular cult long before the centralised papal processes of the later Middle Ages, he was never the subject of a formal canonisation of the modern type.

Severin died in Cologne and was buried in the southern cemetery that afterwards bore his name. His feast day is 23 October. He is honoured as a patron saint of Cologne. Over the centuries hagiographers added miracles, a Bordeaux origin, and various pastoral legends, including stories that associated him with deliverance from drought; such material illustrates the growth of his cult rather than supplying a recoverable biography. He should not be confused with the better-documented Severinus of Noricum, whose life was written by Eugippius, nor with other saints and popes of similar name. The historically cautious portrait is therefore that of a late-fourth-century bishop of Roman Cologne, still in office in 397, commemorated by Gregory of Tours, interred in the extra-mural cemetery to the south of the city, and continuously venerated in the basilica that stands on that site.
