Biography

Short Description

Severino Fabriani was born on 9 January 1792 in Carpi, then in the Duchy of Modena in northern Italy. He received a classical and ecclesiastical education in his native city, entered the seminary, and was ordained a Catholic priest of the diocese. In the early nineteenth century he became concerned with the isolation of deaf and mute persons, who were commonly denied schooling and adequate religious instruction. He studied the pedagogical methods developed in France by Charles-Michel de l'Épée and Roch-Ambroise Cucurron Sicard and set about adapting them to Italian-speaking pupils and to the pastoral needs of his own region.

With the support of Duke Francis IV of Modena he established a school for deaf-mutes in Modena. Fabriani taught the children himself, prepared textbooks and grammatical manuals, and published treatises on the instruction and moral formation of the deaf. He held that deaf persons possessed the same intellectual and spiritual capacities as the hearing and that they should be prepared for the sacraments and for useful roles in society. The institute he directed became a recognized center of specialized education in Emilia. He also wrote poetry and other literary works and took part in local learned academies while remaining focused on his educational apostolate.

To secure the future of the work, especially the education of deaf girls, he founded the Congregation of the Daughters of Providence for the Deaf-Mutes (Figlie della Provvidenza per le Sordomute). The sisters assumed the daily running of the school and the care of the pupils. Fabriani continued to guide the institute until his death in Modena on 27 June 1857. He was a diocesan priest, not a member of a religious order; the congregation he established was a community of women dedicated to this specialized ministry.

After his death a reputation for charity and pedagogical dedication persisted. A cause of beatification was introduced. Following diocesan and Roman investigations, Pope Francis recognized his heroic virtues on 14 June 2016, granting him the title of Venerable. He has not been beatified or canonized and therefore has no universal feast day or official patronages. The religious family and educational institutions associated with his name have continued in Italy, preserving his insistence on the dignity and educability of deaf persons.
