Biography

Short Description

Severinus of Sanseverino and Victorinus of Camerino are two brothers venerated as saints in the Catholic Church. They lived in the sixth century in Picenum, the Adriatic region of central Italy that corresponds roughly to the modern Marche. The surviving accounts, which are late and hagiographical rather than contemporary, present them as members of a prosperous family who, converted to a more radical Christian life, gave their property to the poor and left secular society. They withdrew together to Monte Nero, a height near the Roman municipium of Septempeda, and there lived as hermits.

In the mid-sixth century Italy was convulsed by the Gothic War between the Ostrogoths and the Byzantine Empire, a conflict that brought famine, plague, and the disruption of civic and ecclesiastical life. Against that background the tradition states that Pope Vigilius, whose pontificate lasted from 537 to 555, called the two hermits from their retreat and appointed them bishops. Victorinus was assigned to the see of Camerino; Severinus was assigned to Septempeda. The sources emphasize that they accepted these charges reluctantly, from obedience rather than ambition, a common motif in the lives of hermit-bishops.

Little that is historically secure can be said about their episcopates. No authentic letters, synodal signatures, or contemporary chronicles mention them by name. Later tradition holds that they ruled their churches with pastoral zeal and that Severinus died around the middle of the sixth century. After his death the town of Septempeda gradually took the name San Severino, today San Severino Marche, and his relics were preserved and later translated into the cathedral there. Victorinus is associated with Camerino; some later writers place his death a few years before that of his brother. Exact years of birth are unknown, and the death dates that circulate in modern directories (sometimes given as about 543 for Victorinus and about 550 for Severinus) rest on tradition, not on dated contemporary records.

The brothers have been commemorated jointly, most commonly on 8 June. Their cult is local in origin, typical of many holy bishops of late antique Italy whose memory was kept in the churches they had served and was eventually registered in medieval martyrologies. Severinus became the patron of the town that bears his name. Because the documentary base is so thin, a careful historian must distinguish the consistent core of the tradition—two brothers, hermits near Septempeda, then bishops of Camerino and of Septempeda, honored on 8 June—from legendary elaborations that cannot be verified. No reliable source records a wife or children for either man; their remembered state of life is that of hermits and bishops.
