Biography

Short Description

Saint Severus of Naples was bishop of Naples in Campania in the later fourth and early fifth centuries. Later catalogues of the Neapolitan church count him as the twelfth bishop of the see, succeeding Maximus, and assign him a long episcopate that ended with his death, traditionally placed in 409. Nothing historically secure is known of his birth, parentage, or education; medieval and early modern notices begin only with his tenure as bishop. He belonged to the same generation as Ambrose of Milan, and Neapolitan tradition describes the two men as friends. His years in office spanned the last stages of the Arian conflict in Italy and the opening of the fifth-century crisis of the Western Empire.

Medieval Neapolitan sources, especially the Gesta episcoporum Neapolitanorum and related catalogues of bishops, credit Severus with a substantial programme of church building in the city. He is associated with the foundation or completion of several basilicas, notably a church of the Saviour that later became San Giorgio Maggiore, the basilica of San Giovanni Maggiore, and other urban churches. He is also remembered for translating the relics of an earlier bishop of Naples, Saint Agrippinus, into a church prepared to house that cult. These traditions, written down centuries after the events, cannot be verified in every detail, but they present Severus as a bishop who consolidated Nicene Catholic life in Naples after a period of Arian pressure and who promoted the memory of local saints.

The miracle most frequently attached to his name is the temporary raising of a dead man in order that the deceased might give testimony in a legal dispute. In the usual form of the story, a widow and her children risked losing property because a claimant demanded proof that a debt had already been paid; Severus went to the tomb, restored the dead man to life long enough for him to confirm the payment, and so protected the family. The episode entered medieval accounts of the bishops of Naples and was later summarized in the Roman Martyrology. Whether it preserves any historical incident or is a later hagiographic motif, it established Severus’s reputation as a wonder-working pastor and a defender of the vulnerable.

Severus died in Naples, according to the received chronology in 409, and was buried in the extra-mural Christian cemetery that developed into the Catacombs of San Gennaro. There survives a painted portrait of a haloed bishop identified by inscription as Saint Severus, generally dated to the fifth or sixth century and counted among the earliest images of a Neapolitan bishop. A church dedicated to him, known as San Severo fuori le mura or San Severo alla Sanità, grew up in connection with his burial place. His cult remained chiefly local. He is honoured as one of the patron saints of Naples and as the principal patron of the Apulian city of San Severo, which takes its name from him. The Roman Martyrology commemorates him at the end of April, recalling his episcopal office and the miracle of the raised witness. His historical figure remains that of an obscure but not wholly legendary late antique bishop, known through later local tradition rather than through contemporary letters or chronicles of his own.
