Biography

Short Description

Severus of Ravenna was a fourth-century bishop of the Adriatic see of Ravenna in northern Italy and is among the earliest bishops of that city who can be placed on a reasonably firm historical footing. His name appears among the Western bishops who took part in the Council of Sardica in 343, the gathering summoned in an effort to address the Arian controversy and the case of Athanasius of Alexandria. That conciliar attestation is the principal contemporary documentary anchor for his career. Ravenna was already an important civil and ecclesiastical centre in his lifetime, though it had not yet become the imperial residence it would be in the fifth century. Apart from the Sardica list, strictly contemporary evidence for his life is thin, and later narrative detail belongs largely to hagiography rather than to fourth-century chronicle.

Later legend, which became central to his cult, presents Severus not as a cleric or aristocrat but as a humble wool-comber or weaver living in Ravenna when the see fell vacant. According to this tradition, clergy and people assembled to elect a successor; while they sought a sign, a dove descended and settled on Severus’s head, which was taken as a divine indication that he should be chosen. He was then ordained bishop. The motif of the dove at an episcopal election is familiar from other late-antique vitae and cannot be treated as a verified biographical fact, but it shaped his medieval image and explains why textile workers later claimed him as their patron. Whether or not he had in fact practised a craft, the story emphasises humility of origin and providential elevation, themes typical of episcopal hagiography in northern Italy.

Hagiographical sources also describe Severus as a married man. His wife Vincentia (Vincenza) and their daughter Innocentia were themselves honoured as saints, and tradition holds that the three were buried together. Joint veneration of an episcopal household is unusual among later Western bishop-saints and reflects a period when men already married before ordination were not everywhere required to separate from their families. The family grouping cannot be confirmed from fourth-century documents, but the associated cult is well established in later Ravenna and in the German churches that later claimed their relics. Severus himself is not recorded as a monk or as a member of any religious order; he belongs to the ordinary diocesan episcopate of the fourth-century Latin church.

He is traditionally said to have died in 348 and to have been buried at Classe, the port of Ravenna. In the sixth century a basilica dedicated to him, San Severo in Classe, was built over or near that tomb. He also appears, clearly labelled, among the succession of Ravenna’s early bishops in the mosaics of Sant’Apollinare in Classe, a visual witness that by the age of Justinian he already occupied a fixed place in local episcopal memory. In the ninth century relics associated with Severus, Vincentia, and Innocentia were translated north of the Alps, notably in connection with Mainz and subsequently Erfurt, where a church of Saint Severus became a centre of his cult in Germany. His feast is kept on 1 February. Because of the wool-working legend he is invoked as a patron of weavers, wool-combers, hatters, and milliners. His cult is ancient and of the pre-congregation type; no later formal canonization or beatification by a named pope is recorded.
