Biography

Short Description

Shemon Bar Sabbae, also known as Simeon bar Sabbae or Mar Shimun Bar Sabbae, was a fourth-century bishop of the Church of the East and Catholicos of Seleucia-Ctesiphon, the chief see of Christians living under Sasanian Persian rule. His epithet Bar Sabbae, meaning son of the dyers, indicates a family associated with the dyeing trade rather than with the Iranian nobility. He is remembered principally as a martyr of the persecution associated with Shapur II and is venerated as a saint in the Church of the East and in Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, and Catholic calendars. No reliable source records his place or year of birth, and nothing certain is known of his early life beyond his later prominence at Seleucia-Ctesiphon, the twin royal cities on the Tigris in what is now central Iraq.

He is generally held to have succeeded Papa bar Aggai in the leadership of the church of Seleucia-Ctesiphon in the early fourth century, as that see was becoming the recognized center of the Persian church. After the death of the Roman emperor Constantine, relations between Rome and Persia worsened, and Christians in the Sasanian Empire, whose religion was now that of the rival power, fell under suspicion of political disloyalty. According to the Syriac martyr acts and to the fifth-century historian Sozomen, Shapur II imposed a double tax on the Christian population and ordered Shemon, as their chief bishop, to collect it. Shemon refused, on the grounds that his people were too poor to bear the levy and that a bishop ought not to serve as a royal tax gatherer. He was also accused of friendship with the Roman emperor.

Arrested and brought before the king, Shemon declined to worship the sun or otherwise to apostatize. Traditional accounts place his interrogation and execution at Karka d'Ledan in Beth Huzaye (Khuzistan), where the court was then residing. He was beheaded, according to the acts, on Good Friday. A number of clergy and lay Christians were put to death with him or in the following days. The martyr literature names among them the eunuch Guhshtazad (Usthazanes), a figure of the royal household who had lapsed and then returned to the Christian faith, and Pusai, a craftsman in royal service, together with other priests, deacons, and laypeople. The killing of the catholicos is treated in later tradition as the opening of a long persecution of Sasanian Christians under Shapur II, which ecclesiastical writers described as lasting for decades and as claiming a very large number of victims, though the exact scale cannot be verified from independent evidence.

The principal narrative sources are the Syriac Acts of Simeon bar Sabbae, which survive in more than one recension, and the account in Sozomen's Ecclesiastical History. These texts combine historical report with hagiographical convention, and the precise year of the execution is given variously as 341, 344, or 345; modern reference works most often adopt 344. Shemon was succeeded in the catholicate by Shahdost, who was himself martyred not long afterward. Because the events belong to the mid-fourth century, well before the later medieval procedures of formal canonization, Shemon's sanctity rests on early cult and liturgical commemoration rather than on a named act of canonization or beatification.

The Church of the East and other Christian traditions commemorate Shemon and his companions on several dates in April, notably 17 April in Eastern usage and 21 April in the Roman Martyrology, with further commemorations in some Syriac calendars. He remains one of the defining martyr-catholicoi of the early Persian church. His stand over the double tax and his death under Shapur II were long remembered as a turning point in the history of Christianity in the Sasanian Empire, illustrating both the vulnerability of a religious minority identified with Rome and the emergence of Seleucia-Ctesiphon as a patriarchal see willing to resist royal religious policy.
