Biography

Short Description

Siamanto was the pen name of the Western Armenian poet Atom Yarjanian, born in 1878 in Agn (also called Akn; later Eğin, now Kemaliye) on the upper Euphrates in the Ottoman Empire. He grew up in the Armenian community of that highland town and received his first schooling there before being sent as an adolescent to Constantinople to continue his studies in Armenian institutions of the capital. The Hamidian massacres of the mid-1890s, which struck many Armenian districts including the region of his birth, formed the political climate of his youth and later shaped the themes of witness, mourning, and national endurance in his poetry.

In the late 1890s he left the Ottoman Empire for Egypt and then Europe. He spent extended periods in Paris, where he encountered contemporary French literature and thought, and in Swiss cities, especially Geneva, then a major center of Armenian students, newspapers, and political organizations. There he began to publish verse in Western Armenian and to take part in diaspora intellectual life. His early work mixed lyric intensity with public, often tragic, subject matter: massacre, orphanhood, exile, and appeals to courage. He stood close to the Armenian Revolutionary Federation and to the Armenian periodical press, and he developed an image-rich rhetorical style that drew on both native tradition and European currents.

After the Young Turk Revolution of 1908 he returned to Constantinople amid widespread Armenian hope that constitutional rule would improve Ottoman Armenians’ condition. That hope was shaken by the Adana massacres of 1909 in Cilicia. In response he wrote the cycle commonly known in English as Bloody News from My Friend, which includes dramatic poems of atrocity, among them the frequently anthologized piece known as The Dance, depicting women forced to dance amid slaughter and fire. He also composed a long poem on Saint Mesrop in connection with anniversary commemorations of the Armenian alphabet. Around 1910 he spent time among Armenian immigrants in the United States, particularly in the Boston area, writing for the newspaper Hairenik, before returning to Constantinople, where he remained an active poet and public intellectual of Western Armenian letters.

On 24 April 1915 Ottoman authorities began mass arrests of Armenian writers, professionals, and community leaders in Constantinople, an operation now taken as a principal opening of the Armenian Genocide. Siamanto was among those seized. He was deported from the capital into the interior of Anatolia and was killed later in 1915 at the age of thirty-seven. The exact site and manner of his death are not recorded with full certainty, as was common for intellectuals murdered in the deportations of that year, and no known grave exists. His poetry in Western Armenian is still read as both literature and testimony. He is grouped with Taniel Varoujan, Rupen Sevag, Krikor Zohrab, and other men of letters destroyed in 1915 as a generation whose killing was intended to decapitate Armenian public life. Later Armenian memory has honored the genocide’s victims collectively; Siamanto’s particular legacy is the body of poems he left and his place in that martyred cohort of writers.
