Biography

Short Description

Sidonius, known in French as Saëns, was a seventh-century Irish monk, hermit, and abbot whose name was given to the town of Saint-Saëns in Normandy. Almost nothing about his early life can be established from contemporary records. Later medieval tradition and local cult describe him as a native of Ireland and as a disciple of Saint Fursey (Fursa), the Irish missionary who preached in East Anglia and then settled in Gaul, where Fursey founded a monastery at Lagny-sur-Marne. Sidonius belongs to the generation of Irish monastic figures who followed Columbanus and Fursey into Frankish territories. Surviving accounts of him are late and hagiographical, so an exact year of birth is unknown and even the circumstances of his departure from Ireland cannot be verified in detail.

After Fursey’s death, placed by tradition in the mid-seventh century, Sidonius is said to have gone to Rouen. There he was received by Saint Audoin (also called Ouen or Dado), bishop of Rouen and a leading churchman of Neustria. With Audoin’s support, Sidonius withdrew as a hermit into the forest of Bray (sometimes associated in the sources with the forest of Caux), in the Pays de Bray near the river Varenne, in what is now the department of Seine-Maritime. A community of monks gathered around his cell and a monastery was established. The settlement that grew from this foundation later took the name Saint-Saëns, a French form of the Latin Sidonius. He is remembered as abbot of that house, though the rule he followed would have been that of Irish monastic custom rather than a later medieval order.

Tradition places his death at the monastery around the end of the seventh century, often given approximately as 690, but the year is not attested by a contemporary source and figures such as 684 or 689 also appear in later notices. He was buried at the monastery he had founded, and his relics became the centre of a local cult. In subsequent centuries the house was organized as a Benedictine abbey. Like other religious sites in eastern Normandy it suffered during the Viking raids of the ninth century. The later medieval and early modern history of the abbey is far better documented than the life of its Irish founder. Because the narrative sources are late, many personal details—family, exact itinerary, and the internal life of the first community—remain unknown.

Sidonius has sometimes been identified with Saint Sithney (Sezni), who is culted in Brittany and in Cornwall, where the parish of Sithney bears that name. The identification is possible but not certain. Saint Sithney is the subject of a legend in which he asked to be patron of mad dogs rather than of young women, and he has been invoked against rabies. Independently of that possible link, Sidonius of Saint-Saëns is remembered as an Irish monk who helped plant eremitical and monastic life in seventh-century Neustria under the patronage of the church of Rouen. His feast has been observed on 14 November, especially in the region of Rouen. He was never the object of a formal papal canonization of the later medieval type; his cult rests on early local veneration.
