Biography

Short Description

Sigeberht (also spelled Sigebert) was a seventh-century king of the East Angles and was later venerated as a saint and martyr in the Christian tradition of early medieval England. The principal narrative of his life comes from Bede’s Ecclesiastical History. Bede describes him as the brother of King Eorpwald and thus a member of the East Anglian royal house associated with King Rædwald. During a period of exile in Gaul, which appears to have fallen in the reign of Rædwald or of Eorpwald, Sigeberht received Christian baptism and gained a reputation for learning. After Eorpwald was killed, Bede states that the kingdom remained in pagan error for three years before Sigeberht returned from the Continent and took the throne. He is the first East Anglian ruler known to have been a baptized Christian before his accession.

As king, Sigeberht worked to establish the Church in East Anglia on a more lasting basis. He received Felix, a bishop from Burgundy, and gave him an episcopal see at Dommoc, a place conventionally identified with Dunwich on the Suffolk coast, though the identification is not beyond dispute. Bede records that Sigeberht set up a school in which boys could be taught letters, and that Felix supplied teachers after the pattern of the Kentish church. In the same reign the Irish monk Fursey (Fursa) came to East Anglia and, with royal support, founded a monastery at Cnobheresburg, a site often associated with Burgh Castle in Norfolk. These acts belong to the wider conversion of the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms in the second quarter of the seventh century and made Sigeberht a central figure in the Christianization of his people.

Sigeberht later laid down the kingship in order to enter monastic life. According to Bede he founded a monastery, entrusted royal authority to his kinsman Ecgric, and received the tonsure, intending thereafter to occupy himself only with religious observance. The earliest sources do not name the monastery; later medieval tradition sometimes connected it with Beodricesworth, the later Bury St Edmunds, but that identification is not secure. His abdication is among the earliest recorded cases of an Anglo-Saxon king resigning power for the cloister. No contemporary source names a wife or children, and after his retirement he lived as a monk.

His death followed an invasion by the Mercian king Penda. When the East Angles were hard pressed they sought Sigeberht in his monastery and, against his will, brought him into the field in the hope that his presence would encourage the army. He refused to bear arms and carried only a staff. In the battle that followed both Sigeberht and Ecgric were killed and their force was destroyed. Bede does not give the year or the place of the fighting; modern historians generally place the event in the later 630s or around 640. Because he died as a monk who would not fight, later tradition regarded him as a martyr. He was honoured as a saint in medieval East Anglia, but no early, securely attested feast day, place of burial, or formal act of canonization survives in the sources.
