Biography

Short Description

Sigebert III was a Merovingian king of Austrasia in the seventh century, born in 630 as the son of King Dagobert I. The Chronicle of Fredegar records that his mother was Ragnetrude, a concubine of Dagobert rather than one of the king’s principal queens. In 633 or 634, while Sigebert was still a small child, Dagobert—having become ruler of the whole Frankish realm—set his eldest son over Austrasia as king. The arrangement preserved a distinct Austrasian court and aristocracy. Government during the minority was exercised by leading churchmen and lay magnates, among them Bishop Cunibert of Cologne and, at different times, the mayors of the palace Pepin of Landen and Otto. Metz served as the principal royal centre of the eastern kingdom.

After Dagobert I died in 639, Sigebert remained king of Austrasia while his half-brother Clovis II ruled Neustria and Burgundy. Real authority in Austrasia passed increasingly to the mayors of the palace, a shift later writers associated with the so-called rois fainéants, or “do-nothing kings.” Around 639–640 an Austrasian expedition against Duke Radulf of Thuringia ended in failure, an episode often cited as evidence of the young king’s limited military control. Grimoald, son of Pepin of Landen, became the dominant figure at court. Sigebert married Chimnechild (also called Himnechildis). Traditional accounts give them a son, Dagobert (the future Dagobert II), and a daughter, Bilichild, who later married Childeric II of Neustria. The succession that followed Sigebert’s death is one of the most disputed episodes in seventh-century Frankish history. Grimoald is said to have had the boy Dagobert tonsured and sent into exile in Ireland and to have placed his own son, known as Childebert the Adopted, on the Austrasian throne. Whether Sigebert had himself earlier adopted Childebert remains a matter of scholarly debate.

Sigebert was remembered for personal piety and for substantial monastic patronage in the Ardennes and around Metz. Together with the missionary bishop Remaclus he supported the foundation of the double monastery of Stavelot-Malmedy and the monastery of Cugnon. He also founded the Abbey of Saint-Martin near Metz, which became his burial church. These houses belonged to the wider seventh-century expansion of Columbanian and related monasticism in the Frankish kingdoms. He died on 1 February 656 and was buried at Saint-Martin of Metz. A cult developed after his death, especially in Lorraine. His relics were later elevated at Metz and, in the sixteenth century, were taken to Nancy, of which he became the patron saint. The Catholic Church commemorates him on 1 February; his recognition as a saint belongs to the era before the formal papal canonization process (pre-congregation).
