Biography

Short Description

Sigiramnus (also called Sigirannus, Sigiramn, or, in later French usage, Cyran) was a seventh-century Frankish nobleman who became a monk and abbot in Berry, in central Gaul. He was born in Bourges, an important city of Aquitaine within the Merovingian kingdom, to a family of high standing. His father, Sigo, is described in the surviving Life as count of Bourges. As a young man Sigiramnus was educated at the court of King Chlothar II among other aristocratic youths. He received clerical orders and was ordained deacon by Austregisilus, bishop of Bourges, a prelate who died in the mid-620s. The connection with Austregisilus, if historical, places Sigiramnus’s early career in the first decades of the seventh century.

His relatives expected him to marry and to assume the public honors attached to his lineage. He refused a proposed marriage and, after his father’s death, distributed his inherited property to the poor and to churches. He then spent a period at the basilica of Saint Martin in Tours, one of the principal spiritual centers of Gaul. From there he made a pilgrimage to Rome in order to venerate the tombs of the apostles. These episodes belong to the conventional pattern of Merovingian conversion narratives, but they are the framework given by the Latin Vita Sigiramni, a hagiographical text composed in his own monastery.

After returning from Italy, Sigiramnus founded two monasteries in the wooded region of the Brenne, in the diocese of Bourges. The chief house was Longoretum (later Saint-Cyran-en-Brenne), dedicated to Saint Peter; a second foundation was Méobecq, known in Latin as Millepecus. He ruled Longoretum as abbot. The foundations belong to the broader movement of rural monastic colonization in seventh-century Francia. Independent charters from his lifetime do not survive, and the chronology of the foundations cannot be fixed more precisely than the middle third of the seventh century.

Sigiramnus died at Longoretum, according to later tradition around the year 655, and was buried at his monastery. His cult remained essentially local. The Roman Martyrology commemorates him as a priest and abbot on 4 December. The Vita, written by a monk of Longoretum, is the principal narrative source; it is pious biography rather than a contemporary documentary record, and little else can be verified from independent seventh-century evidence. In later centuries the abbey of Saint-Cyran continued as a Benedictine house and gave its name to the well-known seventeenth-century abbot Jean Duvergier de Hauranne, called Saint-Cyran, who should not be confused with the Merovingian founder.
