Biography

Short Description

Sigismund was king of the Burgundians in the early sixth century and the son of King Gundobad. The Burgundian kingdom then comprised lands in the Rhône basin and adjoining Alpine regions, corresponding to parts of present-day eastern France and western Switzerland. Like other rulers of his people he was raised in the Arian form of Christianity that had long distinguished several Germanic royal houses from their Nicene Gallo-Roman subjects. Under the influence of Avitus, bishop of Vienne, whose letters to him survive, Sigismund accepted the Catholic faith. In 515, before he had yet succeeded his father as sole king, he established a major monastery at Agaunum (today Saint-Maurice-en-Valais) on the site associated with the martyrdom of the Theban Legion. There he instituted a regime of perpetual psalmody, the laus perennis, which made the house famous in the ecclesiastical life of Gaul.

He succeeded Gundobad around 516. His marriage to Ostrogotho, a daughter of Theodoric the Great of the Ostrogoths, formed part of the web of dynastic alliances that linked the Burgundian court to Ravenna and to other post-Roman kingdoms. The couple had a son, Sigeric. After Ostrogotho's death Sigismund took a second wife, whose name is not preserved in the principal narrative sources. In 522, according to Gregory of Tours and later hagiography, Sigismund was persuaded that Sigeric intended to seize the throne and ordered the young man to be strangled. The killing of his own son became the defining moral crisis of his reign. Overcome by remorse, he withdrew for a time to the monastery at Agaunum to do penance. He also had other children, including sons who later shared his fate and a daughter, Suavegotha, who was married to the Frankish king Theuderic I.

In 523 the Frankish kings Chlodomer, Childebert I, and Chlothar I, sons of Clovis I, invaded Burgundy. Sigismund was defeated in the field, took refuge at his foundation of Agaunum, and was captured. He was delivered to Chlodomer, whose seat was at Orléans. Together with his second wife and his remaining sons he was put to death; Gregory of Tours records that they were thrown into a well at a royal villa called Columella, near Orléans, an event commonly dated to 524. Sigismund's brother Godomar escaped and briefly restored Burgundian resistance. Chlodomer himself was killed later in 524 at the Battle of Vézeronce. The Burgundian kingdom did not long survive as an independent power and was absorbed by the Franks in the following decade.

Although he had ordered the death of Sigeric, Sigismund was soon venerated as a martyr. His body was recovered from the well and translated to the Abbey of Saint-Maurice at Agaunum, which remained the centre of his cult. A Latin passion narrative, the Passio Sancti Sigismundi regis, later circulated and shaped his medieval reputation. In the fourteenth century the Emperor Charles IV obtained relics of Sigismund for Prague and promoted him as a patron of the Kingdom of Bohemia; his remains have since been associated with Saint Vitus Cathedral as well as with Saint-Maurice. The Latin Church keeps his feast on 1 May (in some local calendars on 2 May). He is invoked as a patron of Bohemia and the Czech lands, of Burgundy, and in popular devotion against fever. His cult belongs to the era before formal papal canonization processes, and he is therefore counted among the pre-congregation saints.
