Biography
Saint Silvin, also called Silvinus and remembered as Silvin of Auchy, was a Frankish nobleman, missionary bishop, and monk of the later Merovingian period. Tradition places his birth at Toulouse in Aquitaine, in a family of high rank connected with the Merovingian kings. He was educated at the royal court of Austrasia and for some years followed the career of a palatine official, sharing the life and prospects of the Frankish aristocracy in the second half of the seventh century. No reliable source preserves an exact year of birth, and later notices that assign one are conjectural.
A pilgrimage to the Holy Land marked a decisive change in his life. After visiting Jerusalem and other holy places he returned to Gaul determined to abandon secular honours. He received priestly ordination and was later consecrated bishop. He was not given a residential diocese; instead he served as a regionary or missionary bishop, a form of episcopate then used in frontier or incompletely Christianized districts. His field of labour was the north of Frankish Gaul, above all the country of the Morini in the region of Thérouanne, in what is now the Pas-de-Calais. There he preached, baptized, and sought to consolidate Christian practice among a people whose conversion was still uneven and who lived amid the political instability of the later Merovingian kingdoms.
Near-contemporary tradition describes him as austere in personal life, generous toward the poor, and persistent in pastoral work. In his later years he withdrew from active missionary travel and entered the monastery of Auchy (Auchy-lès-Hesdin) in Artois. That house, later closely associated with his cult, provided the setting for his last years of prayer and monastic discipline. He died at Auchy on 15 February in the early eighth century. Liturgical and hagiographical tradition commonly places the year in the period around 717 to 720, without a fully secure documentary date.
Veneration of Silvin grew at his tomb. The Roman Martyrology commemorates him on 17 February as a bishop in the territory of Thérouanne. A Latin life, attributed to a priest named Antenor and composed some generations after his death, is the principal narrative source and must be used with the caution due to early medieval hagiography. Relics were kept at Auchy and in later centuries were in part translated. Silvin was never the object of a formal papal canonization of the later medieval type; his cult is of the ancient, pre-congregational kind. Beyond this outline—noble Toulouse origin, court service, pilgrimage, missionary episcopate among the Morini, monastic retirement, and death at Auchy in the early eighth century—few details can be verified from independent historical evidence.
