Biography

Short Description

Simeon Stylites III is an obscure Christian ascetic counted among the stylites, the pillar-dwelling hermits of the late antique Christian East. Later calendars and lists of saints distinguish him from the two far better documented bearers of the same name and way of life: Simeon Stylites the Elder, who remained for decades on a column near Telanissos in northern Syria in the fifth century, and Simeon Stylites the Younger, who lived on the so-called Wondrous Mountain near Antioch in the sixth century. Surviving notices of the third Simeon are extremely brief. He is reported to have lived as a stylite in Cilicia, the coastal and highland region of southeastern Asia Minor. No contemporary vita, inscription, or chronicle entry has been identified that would permit a detailed reconstruction of his career, family, or dates.

The stylite discipline, made famous by the first Simeon, consisted in remaining for years on a narrow platform atop a column, exposed to the weather, receiving visitors, offering counsel, and practicing extreme fasting and prayer. It spread through Syria, Mesopotamia, Cilicia, and neighboring provinces in the fifth and sixth centuries and attracted both popular veneration and occasional episcopal attention. A hermit named Simeon who adopted this life in Cilicia would have belonged to that regional tradition. Because the name Simeon became closely identified with the original pillar saint, later hagiographers and martyrologists sometimes grouped several pillar hermits under similar names, which has made it difficult to keep their identities separate and has left the third Simeon little more than a name attached to a place and a form of asceticism.

No birth year, death year, or family background can be verified for Simeon Stylites III. He is not known to have held any ecclesiastical office such as bishop, patriarch, or pope. As a stylite he belonged to the monastic and eremitical rather than the clerical hierarchy, and the discipline of the pillar implied a celibate, world-renouncing life. Place of burial, any formal act of canonization or beatification, a specific feast day exclusive to him, and any particular patronages are likewise unrecorded in sources that can be checked. Veneration, insofar as it existed, would have been of the early, popular kind typical of local holy men in the Christian East, later reflected only in the inclusion of his name among stylite saints.

Because almost nothing can be confirmed, any account of Simeon Stylites III must remain cautious. He stands as a reminder that the stylite movement produced more practitioners than famous biographies, and that medieval and modern lists of saints sometimes preserve names whose historical substance has been lost. What can be said with reasonable confidence is only that Christian tradition remembers a third pillar hermit named Simeon, associated with Cilicia, distinguished in the numbering of later compilers from the Elder and the Younger, and honored as a saint in some commemorations of stylites, without a recoverable chronology or a detailed life.
