Biography

Short Description

Simeon the Holy Fool, known in Greek as Symeon ho Salos and also called Symeon of Emesa, was a Christian monk, hermit, and saint of the sixth century whose life became the classic Eastern Christian model of the fool for Christ's sake. He is commemorated in the Eastern Orthodox Church and is also recognized in the Roman Catholic tradition. Almost all that is known of him derives from the Life of Symeon the Fool written by Leontius of Neapolis in Cyprus in the mid-seventh century. Leontius presented his account as based on the testimony of a deacon of Emesa who had been a friend of the saint. The text is both a work of hagiography and a vivid portrait of urban life in late antique Syria.

According to this narrative, Symeon was born in Edessa, an important Christian city of northern Mesopotamia then under Byzantine rule. In his youth he formed a close friendship with a young man named John. The two traveled together to Jerusalem to celebrate the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. Overcome by the sacred sites, they determined to renounce secular life. They received the monastic habit at a monastery in the Jordan region, commonly associated with the lavra of Saint Gerasimus, and after a time of cenobitic discipline they withdrew into the desert near the Dead Sea. There they lived as hermits for approximately twenty-nine years, practicing severe fasting, vigil, and prayer.

After these decades of solitude, Symeon believed himself called to a more public and paradoxical form of asceticism. He parted from John, who remained in the desert, and made his way to the city of Emesa, known today as Homs in Syria. There he assumed the role of a madman. The Life describes him entering the city dragging a dead dog on a rope, disrupting the liturgy by throwing nuts and putting out candles, eating meat in public during the fasts, and frequenting the company of prostitutes while remaining chaste and using these encounters to lead some of the women to repentance. He performed healings, exorcisms, and prophecies in secret, often under cover of grotesque or comic behavior so that he would not be honored as a wonderworker. A small number of people, notably a deacon also named John, came to perceive that his folly was a chosen spiritual path rather than genuine insanity.

Symeon persisted in this manner of life until his death in Emesa in the later sixth century. After he died, those who prepared his body reportedly perceived signs of sanctity, and his reputation as a hidden saint spread. He and his companion John are jointly commemorated on 21 July in the Orthodox calendar. Symeon's example influenced later Byzantine and Russian fools-for-Christ. Because the only substantial source is a hagiographical vita written a generation or more after the events it describes, precise biographical dates cannot be independently confirmed, and some modern historians treat the Life as a literary and theological composition as much as a chronicle. Nonetheless, the Church has long venerated Symeon as a saint, and he is regarded as a patron of holy fools and of jesters.
