Biography

Short Description

Simon of Suzdal, also known as Saint Simon, Bishop of Vladimir and Suzdal, was an East Slavic monk, bishop, and hagiographical writer of the early thirteenth century. Virtually nothing is recorded about his family, the year or place of his birth, or his life before he entered religion. He became a monk at the Kiev Caves Monastery (Kiev Pechersk Lavra), the principal monastic house of Kievan Rus', where he was formed in the eremitic and coenobitic traditions associated with Saints Anthony and Theodosius of the Caves. From that community he was later sent north to the rising principality of Vladimir-Suzdal.

In 1206 Simon was made hegumen of the Monastery of the Nativity of the Theotokos at Vladimir, a house founded by Grand Prince Vsevolod III Yuryevich. In 1214 he was consecrated bishop of the newly organized diocese of Vladimir, Suzdal and Pereslavl, becoming in effect the first resident bishop of the northeastern Rus' lands as they eclipsed Kiev in political importance. He served as a spiritual adviser to Grand Prince Yuri Vsevolodovich and took part in the ecclesiastical life of a region that was consolidating its own identity while remaining in communion with the metropolitanate of Kiev.

Simon’s lasting historical importance rests on his writings. Around 1225 he addressed a long hortatory letter to Polycarp, a monk of the Caves who was tempted to leave the monastery for a bishopric. The letter, together with related narratives, was incorporated into the Kievan Caves Patericon, one of the foundational works of East Slavic hagiography. In it Simon recounted miracles and ascetic exploits of earlier Caves fathers, insisted on the superiority of monastic stability over episcopal ambition, and provided details about the early history of the Lavra that are not found elsewhere. The text is a primary source both for the monastery and for thirteenth-century Rus' spirituality.

Simon died on 22 May 1226 and was buried in the cathedral of his former monastery, the Nativity of the Theotokos in Vladimir. He came to be venerated as a saint in the Russian Orthodox Church; his principal feast is kept on 10 May, and he is also remembered in the synaxes of the saints of Vladimir and of the Kiev Caves. Surviving evidence for his biography is sparse and consists chiefly of chronicle notices, the Patericon itself, and later liturgical commemorations. No contemporary vita of any length is known, and many personal particulars remain unknown.
