Biography

Short Description

Simon Phan Đắc Hoà was a Vietnamese Catholic layman, physician, and martyr, born in 1787 in the village of Quần Anh Hạ, in the prefecture of Xuân Trường, Nam Định province, in Tonkin in northern Vietnam. The region already had a substantial Catholic population from the missions of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and he was raised in that setting. He trained in traditional medicine and practiced as a lương y, a physician known both for ordinary practice and for treating the poor without payment. Over time he acquired land and a degree of prosperity, which accounts of his life say he used in part to help the needy and to support Catholic communities that had little legal protection.

He married and had children and lived as a householder rather than as a priest or member of a religious order. Nineteenth-century notices present him as a practicing lay Catholic who helped sustain church life when public worship was dangerous. From the 1820s Emperor Minh Mạng of the Nguyễn dynasty issued increasingly severe edicts against Christianity, treating it as a foreign teaching that threatened Confucian order and royal authority. Missionaries were hunted, churches were destroyed, and Vietnamese Catholics were pressed to recant, often by trampling a crucifix. In that climate Phan Đắc Hoà is reported to have sheltered priests and fellow believers, making his household a place of refuge.

In 1840 he was denounced, arrested, and interrogated. He was tortured in an effort to force apostasy and to obtain names of clergy and other Catholics. He refused to renounce his faith or to trample the cross. On 12 December 1840 he was beheaded at the Bảy Mẫu execution ground in Nam Định. He was about fifty-three years old. His death belongs to the cluster of executions of bishops, priests, and laypeople in Tonkin in the late 1830s and 1840, in the last years of Minh Mạng’s reign.

Pope Leo XIII beatified him on 27 May 1900 with a large group of martyrs of Tonkin, Annam, and Cochinchina. Pope John Paul II canonized him in Rome on 19 June 1988 among the one hundred and seventeen Martyrs of Vietnam. The Catholic Church commemorates him on 24 November, the feast of those martyrs; some local traditions also recall the December date of his death. He is venerated as a married layman and physician who remained steadfast under state persecution.
