Biography

Short Description

The name Simon Qin Cunfu combines a Western baptismal name with a Chinese surname and given name, a pattern long typical of Chinese Christians, especially Catholics, from the late Ming and Qing periods onward. Simon is a male Christian name associated in the churches with the apostle Peter, Simon the Zealot, or other New Testament figures, and was commonly conferred at baptism. The surname Qin is well attested in various regions of China. Beyond this onomastic evidence, however, the individual cannot be securely identified in the standard martyrologies, beatification positios, diocesan necrologies, or major biographical dictionaries of Chinese Christianity that are available as reliable historical sources.

He does not appear among the 120 Martyrs of China canonized by Pope John Paul II in 2000, nor in the better-documented lists of Boxer Uprising victims from 1900, the earlier Qing persecutions, or the recognized confessors of the twentieth-century Chinese Catholic community. No feast day, patronage, religious order, episcopal see, or act of beatification or canonization can be verified for this name in the Roman Martyrology, the liturgical calendars used by the Catholic Church in China, or corresponding Orthodox commemorations. Claims that circulate only in informal, genealogical, or unsourced listings cannot take the place of ecclesiastical or archival documentation.

Chinese Catholic practice from the seventeenth century, under Jesuit, Franciscan, Dominican, Paris Foreign Missions, and later missionary societies, regularly paired a saint’s name with a retained Chinese personal name. That convention is too widespread to isolate a unique person without further identifiers such as native county, courtesy name, year of baptism or death, or a contemporary missionary letter. Historians of Christianity in China therefore treat sparsely attested names with caution and distinguish them from martyrs whose causes produced detailed historical records.

No verified year of birth or death, place of origin, burial, spouse, children, or religious profession can be assigned without substituting conjecture for evidence. A responsible hagiographical and historical account must therefore remain limited: Simon Qin Cunfu is an obscure name in the broader history of Christianity in China. Reconstructing even a basic biography would require matching the name to parish registers, apostolic-vicariate reports, or other primary Chinese church archives that have not been identified in the sources that can be checked here.
