Biography

Short Description

Simon the Athonite, known in Eastern Orthodox tradition as Saint Simon the Myrrh-gusher or Simon Myrrhobletes (Greek: Hosios Simon ho Myrovlitis), was a thirteenth-century Greek Orthodox hermit and monk, remembered as the traditional founder of the Monastery of Simonopetra on Mount Athos. No contemporary charter, chronicle, or archival notice preserves a verified year of birth, a named birthplace, or a securely documented year of death. What is known of him comes almost entirely from later Athonite hagiography and from the foundation legend of Simonopetra, transmitted within monastic memory rather than by independent Byzantine historiography. Those accounts present him as an eremitical ascetic who settled in a cave on the precipitous south-eastern side of the Athonite peninsula, in territory of the Byzantine world that corresponds to present-day northern Greece.

The core of his legend is a Nativity vision. According to the tradition kept at Simonopetra, the Theotokos appeared to Simon on the night of Christ’s Nativity and commanded him to build a monastery on a nearby rocky pinnacle, calling the place a “new Bethlehem” and promising her protection and material provision for those who would live there. A supernatural light is said to have marked the site. Simon and a small band of disciples then established a house on that crag, which received the name Simonopetra, “Simon’s Rock.” Monastic histories commonly place this foundation in the mid-thirteenth century, a date often given as about 1257, though the early architectural and documentary history of the monastery is thin, and later fourteenth-century patronage—especially that associated with the Serbian magnate Jovan Uglješa—was important to the medieval community’s survival and rebuilding. The cave identified as Simon’s hermitage has continued to be shown to visitors near the monastery.

In the spiritual portrait drawn by Orthodox synaxaria, Simon belongs to the classic Athonite type of the hesychast hermit: withdrawal from the world, severe fasting, and unceasing prayer, followed by the gathering of disciples and the organization of a coenobium. He held no episcopal or patriarchal office and was not a bishop of Rome. After his death his relics were said to exude fragrant myrrh, which is the origin of the epithet Myrrhobletes. That cult of myrrh-streaming relics is a familiar pattern in Orthodox sanctity and helped fix his local veneration on Athos. Burial and relic-keeping are associated with Simonopetra itself.

The Eastern Orthodox Church commemorates him on 28 December. There was no papal canonization or Latin beatification; his cult is that of an Athonite monastic saint, recognized in Orthodox liturgical calendars and especially at Simonopetra and in churches linked to that house. Precise biographical data that a modern historian would require—parentage, secular career, an exact chronology of tonsure and death—are not recoverable from sources that meet a strict evidentiary standard. Dates sometimes repeated in later synaxaria should therefore be treated as traditional rather than as established fact. What remains historically and religiously secure is his place in Athonite memory as the visionary hermit whose name and cave-site stand behind one of the Holy Mountain’s most dramatic cliff monasteries.
