Biography

Short Description

Simon the Zealot, also called Simon Zelotes, Simon the Cananaean, or Simon the Canaanite, was one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus Christ according to the four New Testament lists of the apostles in Matthew 10:4, Mark 3:18, Luke 6:15, and Acts 1:13. Almost nothing about his life is recorded in the canonical Gospels or in Acts beyond his inclusion among the Twelve. He is distinguished from Simon Peter by the epithet that appears in Greek as Zelotes in Luke and Acts and as Kananaios (Cananaean) in Matthew and Mark. Both terms are generally understood to render an Aramaic word related to zeal. No reliable source records his year or place of birth; he is presumed to have been a first-century Jew from the milieu of Jesus's Galilean and Judean ministry, but that remains inference rather than documentation.

Whether Simon belonged to the Jewish political movement known as the Zealots, which advocated armed resistance to Roman rule, remains a matter of scholarly debate. The organized Zealot party is often associated with the period leading up to the First Jewish-Roman War in the later first century, after the public ministry of Jesus, so some historians interpret the title as referring to personal religious fervor rather than membership in a later political faction. Others allow that a zealous nationalist outlook could have existed earlier among Jesus's followers. The New Testament itself gives no further biographical detail that would settle the question, and no extra-biblical first-century source supplies an independent life of this apostle. After the apostolic lists he disappears from the canonical record.

Later Christian tradition filled the silence of the canonical texts with a variety of missionary itineraries. Eastern accounts often place Simon's preaching in Egypt and then in Persia or Mesopotamia, sometimes in company with the apostle Jude (Thaddeus). Western medieval sources, including Jacobus de Voragine's Golden Legend, likewise pair him with Jude and describe journeys through Egypt, North Africa, and Persia. Separate and generally later legends associate him with Britain or with other regions; these claims lack early documentary support and are treated by historians as pious tradition rather than established fact. The diversity of the stories itself indicates that no single, early, and widely accepted account of his later career survived.

Accounts of his death are similarly diverse and historically unverified. One widespread tradition holds that he was martyred in Persia, sometimes specified as being sawn in two, which later inspired his association with sawyers; other versions speak of crucifixion or of death by the sword. A minority tradition claims he died peacefully in old age. No contemporary or near-contemporary source confirms the place or manner of his death, and proposed burial sites and relics, including claims connected with Rome and with Toulouse, cannot be historically authenticated. Veneration of Simon as an apostle and saint is nonetheless ancient in both East and West. In the Roman Catholic, Anglican, and Lutheran calendars his feast is kept on 28 October together with Saint Jude. The Eastern Orthodox Church commemorates him on 10 May. He is popularly invoked as a patron of sawyers, tanners, and curriers. Because the apostles were venerated as saints from the earliest centuries of the Church, there was no later formal process of beatification or canonization by a named pope.
