Biography

Short Description

Simone Ballachi was born in 1240 in Santarcangelo di Romagna, in the Romagna region of north-central Italy. He belonged to a noble family; his father was a count who followed a military career in papal service. Raised with the expectation of a similar path, Simone received training in arms as a young man. Despite this preparation he developed a vocation to religious life and chose to abandon prospects of warfare or secular advancement.

He entered the Order of Servants of Mary, known as the Servites, as a lay brother rather than as a cleric. Assigned to the Servite convent in Forlì, he spent decades in humble labor as the community's gardener. He was noted for extreme personal austerity, including fasting, night vigils, and penitential practices, and for a life of prayer centered on devotion to the Virgin Mary, to whom the Servite Order is dedicated. Hagiographical accounts attribute to him visions, the gift of prophecy, and miraculous healings.

The Servite Order, founded in Florence in 1233, was still relatively young during Ballachi's lifetime and was expanding through northern and central Italy. Lay brothers such as Ballachi performed the essential manual work of the convents while priests of the order preached and exercised pastoral care. He lived through the factional conflicts that marked thirteenth- and early fourteenth-century Romagna. Tradition holds that he sometimes offered spiritual counsel in that unsettled environment. He died in Forlì on 5 November 1319.

A cult of veneration formed around him in Forlì and among the Servites and continued for centuries. In 1820 Pope Pius VII confirmed this cultus, thereby beatifying Simone Ballachi. He has never been canonized. His feast day is 5 November. Surviving information about him is limited and largely derived from later hagiographical sources rather than from a rich contemporary documentary record, which is typical for a lay brother of his era and station.
