Biography

Short Description

Saint Simpert, also known as Simbert, Sintbert, or Simpertus, was a Benedictine monk, abbot, and bishop of the late eighth and early ninth centuries, active in Alsace and in the diocese of Augsburg in what is now southern Germany. Later medieval tradition identified him as a nephew or close kinsman of Charlemagne, but contemporary evidence for his family origin is thin, and no reliable source records a precise place or year of birth. He was formed at the Abbey of Murbach in Alsace, a major Benedictine house, where he took the monastic habit and in time became abbot. That monastery remained his spiritual and administrative base even after he was raised to the episcopate.

In 778 Charlemagne appointed him bishop of Augsburg. He continued to hold the abbacy of Murbach at the same time, an unusual dual charge that reflected both royal trust and the still-developing structure of the Carolingian church in recently consolidated lands. As bishop he worked to restore a see that had been weakened by earlier political conflict in Bavaria and Swabia. He is credited with rebuilding or renovating churches in Augsburg, including work associated with the cathedral and with the shrine of Saint Afra, and with promoting monastic life and pastoral order across the diocese. He also served at times as a royal missus, linking episcopal office with Carolingian administration.

Hagiographical tradition portrays Simpert as a man of charity and reported miracles, especially those involving the protection and healing of children. These stories underlay his later reputation as a helper of the young and of women in childbirth. He died in Augsburg on 13 October 807 (a date given by the principal modern accounts, though a few older notices differ by a year or two) and was buried in the city. His cult grew as one of the principal local cults of Augsburg, alongside those of Saints Ulrich and Afra.

He is venerated as a patron of Augsburg, of children, and of pregnant women. His feast is kept on 13 October. Relics associated with him have long been honored in Augsburg, above all in the cathedral, and he remains a figure of regional Catholic devotion in Bavaria. No formal modern process of canonization is recorded; his cult belongs to the older, locally rooted veneration of a Carolingian bishop-abbot.
