Biography

Short Description

Simplicius, Faustinus and Beatrix (also known as Beatrice, and in Latin as Viatrix) are a group of early Christian sibling martyrs associated with the city of Rome and commemorated together in Western liturgical tradition. According to the account preserved in later martyr acts and in the Roman Martyrology, they suffered in the Great Persecution under the emperor Diocletian, an event conventionally placed in about 302 or 303. Simplicius and Faustinus are described as brothers; Beatrix as their sister. No reliable ancient source records a year or place of birth for any of the three, and almost nothing historically certain is known of their lives before the events surrounding their deaths. They are not documented as clergy, as members of a religious order, or as holders of any ecclesiastical office, and they belong to the large class of Roman lay martyrs whose cult was already established in late antiquity.

The traditional narrative of their passion, which scholars regard as legendary in many of its details and of comparatively late composition, states that Simplicius and Faustinus were arrested for refusing to offer sacrifice to the pagan gods. After torture they were beheaded and their bodies were thrown into the Tiber. Beatrix is said to have recovered the corpses from the river and to have buried them in the cemetery of Generosa at a site called ad Sextum Philippi on the Via Portuensis, south of Rome. She then, according to the same acts, lived in hiding for some months with a fellow Christian before being denounced. A man named Lucretius, portrayed in the legend as coveting her property, is said to have caused her arrest. Beatrix was imprisoned and killed by strangulation. Later hagiographic elaborations add that Lucretius afterwards died suddenly at a banquet after mocking the martyrs, an episode that belongs to a familiar type of moralizing motif rather than to independently verified history.

Whatever the value of those narrative particulars, the existence of an early cult is better grounded. The cemetery of Generosa on the Via Portuensis was a known Christian burial ground, and archaeological work there has brought to light a small basilica and inscriptions connected with the memory of these martyrs. Their names appear in the Martyrologium Hieronymianum. In the late seventh century Pope Leo II (682–683) translated relics of Simplicius, Faustinus, Beatrix and other saints to a church he built in Rome near Santa Maria Maggiore and dedicated to Saint Paul. Relics attributed to the three have since been claimed by various churches in Rome and elsewhere in Europe. Their liturgical commemoration falls on 29 July, a date they long shared in the Roman calendar with Saint Martha of Bethany. In the 1969 revision of the General Roman Calendar their feast was removed from the universal celebration, but they remain inscribed in the Roman Martyrology on 29 July and may be observed in particular calendars.

Because the surviving Acts are late and heavily conventional, historians treat the scenes of torture, the recovery of the bodies from the Tiber, and the figure of Lucretius with caution, while accepting that veneration of these martyrs in Rome is ancient and was topographically tied to the Via Portuensis cemetery. They were never the object of a formal papal canonization of the later medieval or modern kind; their status as saints rests on continuous ancient cult. No marriage, children, or religious profession is documented for them in sources that can be verified, and they are not recorded as patrons of any particular place, profession, or cause in the way that some better-known martyrs are. The group therefore illustrates both the density of Roman martyr commemoration in the fourth century and the limits of what can be known with confidence about individual victims of the Diocletianic persecution.
