Biography

Short Description

Saint Sinicius (Latin Sinicius; French Sinice; also rendered Sinicus) is remembered in the medieval tradition of the church of Reims as an early bishop of that see, conventionally placed in the third century. Almost nothing about him can be verified from contemporary evidence. The principal narrative was written centuries later by Flodoard of Reims in his Historia Remensis ecclesiae (tenth century) and was repeated in episcopal catalogues and martyrologies. According to that tradition, Sinicius and Sixtus (French Sixte) were missionaries connected with the evangelization of the Remi in Belgica Secunda. Later legend associated their sending with Pope Sixtus II (257–258), thereby linking the origins of the Reims church to Rome and to a pope who died a martyr. Sixtus is listed as first bishop of Reims; Sinicius is named as his successor, and Amantius (Amand) as the third. Some versions of the story also connect Sinicius with the beginnings of the church of Soissons before he took Reims.

Modern historians treat this third-century succession with great caution. There is no third-century inscription, letter, or conciliar act that names Sinicius. Christianity in the region is securely attested by the early fourth century—Imbetausius of Reims took part in the Council of Arles in 314—but the names Sixtus, Sinicius, and Amantius at the head of the Reims list may reflect later foundation legend as much as recoverable biography. The tale of a Roman mission under Sixtus II in particular is widely regarded as a retrospective construction, designed to give apostolic-Roman prestige to an already important Gallic church. Even so, the cult of Sixtus and Sinicius as founding bishops was firmly established in the medieval diocese of Reims and was not a late antiquarian invention of Flodoard alone.

No reliable source records Sinicius’s birthplace, family, education, or the year of his death. Later compilers sometimes assigned his death to the later third century (figures such as “about 280” appear in secondary lists), but those dates are conventional, not documented. He is presumed to have died at Reims while holding the see, which is why later tradition locates his death there; the place of burial is not independently verified. Nothing is known of a spouse or children, nor of membership in a later religious order: he is remembered as a diocesan bishop of the pre-monastic missionary age. He was never Bishop of Rome or a patriarch of an Eastern see.

Sinicius is venerated as a saint in the Catholic Church by ancient local cult rather than by a recorded papal canonization. His feast has traditionally been kept on 1 September, together with Saint Sixtus of Reims. He is not the principal patron of the city or diocese of Reims—that role belongs above all to Saint Remigius (Rémi)—and no comprehensive list of later patronages (places, trades, or causes) is securely attached to his name. His historical importance, such as it can be stated, lies in the foundation memory of the church of Reims and in the liturgical commemoration of its earliest bishops, not in a recoverable personal biography.
