Biography

Short Description

Siricius was a native of Rome and, according to the Liber Pontificalis, the son of a man named Tiburtius. No contemporary source records a reliable year of birth. He belonged to the Roman clergy for many years before his election, serving as a deacon under Pope Liberius and then under Pope Damasus I. When Damasus died in December 384, Siricius was chosen bishop of Rome. The election was not uncontested: supporters of Ursinus, who had already opposed Damasus, again put forward a rival claim, but Siricius obtained the recognition of the Roman church and of the imperial court of Valentinian II. He governed the see of Rome until his death in 399, a span that coincided with the last years of Theodosius I and with the legal establishment of Nicene Christianity as the religion of the empire.

Siricius is the first pope from whose pontificate a substantial body of decretals survives. The most important is the letter known as Directa, sent in 385 to Himerius, bishop of Tarragona, who had addressed a series of disciplinary questions to Damasus. Siricius ruled on the proper seasons for baptism, the reception of those baptized by Arians, the administration of penance, and the obligation of sexual continence for bishops, priests, and deacons after ordination. He presented these decisions as binding throughout the Church and grounded them in the authority of the Apostolic See and of the apostle Peter. Other letters to bishops in Italy, Gaul, and Africa similarly treated Rome as a source of universal norms and as a court of appeal. In this way he helped to turn occasional papal correspondence into a more systematic instrument of Latin church government.

Doctrinal controversies also marked his pontificate. A Roman synod held under his presidency around 390 condemned the teachings of Jovinian, who denied that virginity and asceticism conferred a higher state than marriage and who held that the baptized could not be overthrown by sin. Ambrose of Milan issued a parallel condemnation. Siricius likewise opposed views associated with Bishop Bonosus that appeared to call into question the perpetual virginity of Mary. In the East he maintained communion with the Nicene hierarchy and took an interest in the troubled affairs of the see of Antioch. The execution of the Spanish teacher Priscillian by the civil power had taken place at Trier in 385; like Ambrose and Martin of Tours, later tradition associates Siricius with reluctance to see heresy punished by death, although the surviving documents do not permit a detailed reconstruction of his personal role in that affair.

Siricius died in Rome on 26 November 399 and was succeeded by Pope Anastasius I. He was buried in the cemetery of Priscilla on the Via Salaria, where an inscription naming him as bishop was later found. The Liber Pontificalis ascribes certain construction or restoration work in Rome to his pontificate, notices that historians treat with caution. He has been venerated as a saint in the Catholic Church; his feast is kept on 26 November, the date traditionally assigned to his death. His historical importance lies less in political drama than in the consolidation of Roman disciplinary practice and in the emergence of the papal decretal as a characteristic form of church government.
