Biography

Short Description

Sisoes the Great, also known as Abba Sisoes or Sisoes of Scete, was an Egyptian Desert Father of the fourth and early fifth centuries, counted among the most celebrated monastic elders of Christian Egypt. He is remembered above all as a disciple of Anthony the Great and as a model of humility, watchfulness, and unceasing repentance. After Anthony’s death in 356, Sisoes withdrew to the Inner Mountain in the Eastern Desert and occupied the cave that had belonged to his master, remaining there as a solitary for many decades. Before that he had lived among the monks of Scetis in the Wadi El Natrun. The Sayings of the Desert Fathers preserve a substantial body of brief narratives and maxims attributed to him; they repeatedly warn against spiritual pride, urge the remembrance of death, and present repentance as the true work of the monk.

Drawn by a desire for greater solitude, he spent the greater part of his adult life in the harsh setting of the Eastern Desert. Visitors and would-be disciples sought him out, among them a companion named Abraham who appears in several of the sayings. Tradition describes him as having attained a high degree of dispassion and as being granted gifts of discernment. In advanced age, finding the press of visitors too great, he relocated to Clysma, an ancient port at the head of the Gulf of Suez in the eastern Nile Delta, and continued his eremitical life there until his death.

Accounts of his last hours, transmitted in the Gerontikon and later synaxaria, place his death in 429. According to these narratives, as he lay dying his face became radiant; he spoke of seeing the prophets, then the apostles, then angels coming for him, and even then asked that he be allowed a little more time in which to repent, a request long cited as the supreme expression of monastic humility. No contemporary document records a year of birth, a native town within Egypt, or any family of origin beyond his identity as an Egyptian Christian who embraced the desert life. He was never ordained bishop and held no patriarchal or papal office, remaining a simple monk and spiritual father.

He is commemorated on 6 July in the liturgical calendars of the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Roman Catholic Church, and he is likewise honored in Oriental Orthodox tradition. A well-known later Byzantine icon type shows Sisoes standing before the tomb of Alexander the Great, contemplating the conqueror’s remains as a meditation on the transience of earthly power; the scene is a theological composition of the post-Byzantine period rather than a documented episode from the saint’s own lifetime. No reliable early source assigns him particular patronages of places, professions, or causes, nor does any source name a spouse or children, consistent with a life of consecrated celibacy in the desert.
