Biography

Short Description

Saint Siviard (Latin Siviardus) was a seventh-century abbot of the monastery of Anisole, afterwards called Saint-Calais, in the region of Maine in western Gaul, corresponding to the modern department of Sarthe in France. No contemporary document records the year or place of his birth, and the details of his family and early life remain unknown. He belongs to the large number of Merovingian monastic saints whose memory was kept locally and later entered the martyrologies, rather than to those whose careers are illuminated by rich contemporary narrative sources.

The monastery of Anisole had been founded in the sixth century by Saint Carilef (also called Calais or Carilephus), a monk formed at Micy near Orléans and associated with Saint Avitus. The house stood on the river Anisole and became a notable abbey in the diocese of Le Mans. Siviard entered this community, lived there as a monk, and was in time elected abbot. The length of his abbacy is not independently attested. Traditional accounts, followed by later hagiographical compilations, place his death at the monastery on 1 March 687.

Siviard’s cult is attested by his inclusion in the Roman Martyrology on 1 March, with the notice that he was abbot in the monastery of Saint-Calais in the territory of Le Mans. His relics were kept at the abbey. Like many Frankish monastic houses, Saint-Calais suffered in the ninth-century Viking incursions, and the later medieval history of the abbey includes translations and reconstitutions of its saintly remains. A medieval Life of Siviard is listed in hagiographical catalogues, but the historical kernel that can be verified is limited to his abbacy at Anisole and the liturgical commemoration of 1 March.

He did not hold the see of Rome or any patriarchal office. As a monk and abbot he lived under a celibate monastic discipline; there is no record of a spouse or of children. His sanctity was of the ancient, locally recognized kind, received into the martyrology without a formal papal canonization of the type that became standard in the later Middle Ages. Standard reference works do not assign him a developed list of patronages of places, trades, or causes. He remains an obscure but authentic figure of Merovingian monasticism in western Gaul, known chiefly through the calendar and the history of the abbey that later took the name of its founder, Saint Calais.
